I think the poster has made it VERY CLEAR that he has no plans of moving it more than once. With that said if you are looking used, the fifth wheel trailers will probably be more roomy. I have a friend that just got rid of his fifth wheel because he was tired of loosing the room in the bed of his truck while camping. He bought a new 38' bumper pull with triple slides an outdoor kitchen and a ceiling high enough it has ceiling fans. Most of the older bumper pulls will have a lower ceiling and generally more entry level equipment though. Just make sure to get at least one slide out what ever you do. The original post was "Difference between travel trailer and 5th Wheeler"...he WAS ASKING FOR INFORMATION I do believe

Decide for yourself...do you want the weight on your bumper or over your axle. I have owned both types and would buy a fifth wheel over a bumper pull any day. Much easier on the tow vehicle. It's not on the bumper with a weight distribution hitch. Still behind the axle.

It's not on the bumper with a weight distribution hitch. Still behind the axle. The WDH shifts weight to the front axle of the tow vehicle and the trailer axles. Both TV axles bear a portion of the weight. Think of a when you lift the handles on a wheelbarrow. Weight is shifted to the front wheel and your feet, and off the wheelbarrow legs. Same principle.

If your using an adequate tow vehicle I see little difference. You are right....the key word is "adequate"...most half tons aren't a good match for a 5th wheel...if you are trying to stay within the mfgrs limitations.

Since the OP stated that he won't be towing the RV, but it will remain parked at a campsite, I recommend a 5th wheel, IF: He and his family don't have any physical issues making steps difficult to deal with. The 5th wheel has more room, more storage, and just seems to be much less confining. They are however generally more expensive.
I am in the process of evaluating my future needs and will decide between the two in the next year or so, to replace my current travel trailer. I have a vehicle (F350) that will easily tow either, but arthritis in my hips is causing me to lean toward the travel trailer.

If it is staying at the lake most of the time you can hire someone to move it when you are ready. Use their vehicle when moving somewhere and enjoy the trailer with your 1/2 ton truck. Don't know the cost, but was told it was 'reasonable" when considering the same thing. Secret Haven has an open spot right now. Nice little park.
Put the plug in.

why not just buy one that is already set up at lake fork and you dont have to worry about towing/backing it. I saw a realy neat set up in the classified section.

My father in law moved his 5th wheel using a company to move it, cost him around $500 to move it from San Marcos to Victoria last month. he can now enjoy it while driving his Toyota Yaris back and forth on the weekends
Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst
