If you don't mind buying off ebay you can get excellent reel for your price range that will be above the $100 class of reels in stores. I have actually bought an Abu STX for $119. I think its a good option.

Walmart dot com has Tatulas for under $100 on occasion. Have you checked there?

Bass Pro Shops Pro Qualifier Baitcast Reel - Edwin Evers uses these. $99 can get them cheaper when they go on sale every year. I believe I have seen them at $79 on sale. I've been using them for 3 years now and have had no problems.

I played around with some of the BPS reels this weekend in Bossier and compared them in smoothness to the reels in the ABU Garcia REVO line. Some of those BPS reels feel really good for the money.......I've been looking for a whole new lipless crankbait outfit. I'm looking @ Duckett, Castaway, and Falcon rods but I was thinking about topping it of with either the Bionic, Carbon Lite, or Johnny Morris Signature reel in a 7:1 ratio. The Signature is $160 but the other two fall below $100 and are really nice as well........

Lews Speed Spool LFS is a very good reel for $100. Check it out here and look at the reviews.

I own a handful of the Lew's Speed Spools and the BPS Pro Qualifiers. They're both quality reels for the money.

I have a cheap Lew's that I picked up on a combo sale at Dicks. Yeah, it doesn't have the same bells and whistles as my more expensive Lew's does but I never think twice about using it if it is the one that I pick up. Has worked flawlessly and never backlashes on me.

Why compare the black max? Do you have that reel? Also, the just redid all the max line of reels. I have a promax that has hauled in a 20lb sack and culled all day then been fished back off the bottom of the lake that if nothing else, I carry for good luck still.
The orra line is what you should be considering, they are as smooth and flawless as any higher end reel but give up some on weight of course. Available in slower winch speed or normal/faster 6.4 and I think 7.0 ratios. Do yourself a huge favor and check ebay, dirt cheap revo rockets and stuff on there.
