J-Moe & I were back at it Friday morning

Well I missed the bite this morning, my pillow was just too strong. Got there about 7:15 and met Hook and j-moe who gave me the bad news. I worked it hard until 1, had 3 whites up to 3 lbs, a 4 lb hybrid, and 5 gar. All on 3.5" paddletails and 4" hard jerkbait (the gar loved it)

Great video. That morning I had 6 whites (5 on the fly), 1 hybrid, 2 gar and a big buffalo. Biggest white was 4.25. Released a new lake record

Tuesday's morning run to the spillway found the fishing a little slower than the week before but Thursdays was almost missed entirely! Fifteen minutes tardy means a lot when the schooling started just before first light. The late start cost us our usual spot below the dam so we redirected our efforts to the north shore.

By the time I got to flinging my fly the sky was pink and gaining light fast. The bass were right at my feet chasing shad and hit my fly four consecutive times before I hooked up with the first bass. It took another 15 minutes or so before the second hybrid would come to hand.. and then a good while longer for the gar to make it's appearance. Those three fish were it for me while Joe hooked up with a few and lost a nice big runner of some sort.. It is not unusual to snag into gar, big carp or buffalo when doing this type of fishing. A big buffalo will really run and waste precious time when it's something other than a buffalo you are after..

Lake level is 247.13. 9.13 feet above normal. Releasing 2143 cfs. I fished below the dam Saturday afternoon. Lots and lots of gaspergou being caught.

I went over to Overlook Marina on Sunday. Water is still over the road by the marina. There were hundreds of bluegill and longear beds on the road. Lots of small fish running around. I wade fished the cove and found a bed of small green sunfish. Only problem is that all of this will no longer be under water in a couple weeks or less.

Everywhere I go around the lake I see lots of small fish, good signs the fishing will be great in the months to come.

The road from Overlook Marina to the dam is now open.

Fishing gets a little squirrelly on the full moon as the fish move and feed to a odd rhythm. Last Saturday the early morning fishing in the spillway was very slow and it wasn't until nearly 8am before the fish started feeding based on the catch rate I observed. The best "catching" occured much later in the day around mid afternoon from what reports I heard.
I skipped Sunday and Monday making it out to the ranch on both of those days before returning to the spillway early Tuesday morning. The first cast of the day resulted in a nice whitebass or hybrid but it was still too dark to see well enough to positively identify that fish on camera.
Several hits and misses followed with three more fish to hand before they moved back to the deep. What is strange is that standing very near to me, throwing the same type of fly didn't result in anything to hand for my buddy on this morning run. I cannot account for the difference in catch rate in a situation like this but I have a very hard time believing that I'm doing anything different or much better than any other fishermen. I'm just lucky that way I guess..

Twice in one day..

Hot August days are upon us here in the south but that just makes fishing in the early morning more enjoyable. Thursday's run to the Lake Somerville spillway was ahead of schedule but getting an early start didn't result in more fish on this morning. With the half moon overhead the fish made their appearance a full twenty minutes later then usual..
