And I'm sure you look good with your dunkin donut tires. I'll stick to a 4wd, but if done right, more suspension travel is worth its weight in gold.

So in your opinion what is the magical number of times 4wd getting used makes it justified?

There isn't a number. I know that I will use 4x4, not if or might or I could, I use it several times a year sometimes several times a month/week/weekend, therefore I buy one. If we didn't have our ranch I wouldn't need one and would go back to a 2wd if buying another truck.

I wonder how many people who have a 4x4 for no reason other than "I might need it some day" fall into the same category of people who sell guns, motorcycles, big boy toys etc. every year because they cant pay their income/property taxes?

All I'm saying is buying just because you may need it someday is pretty stupid.

There is an old saying....Better to have and not need, than to need and not have. Guess What? MY 4WD is a RAM with a CUMMINS......

4wd on a diesel is almost a requirement if you ever get off of pavement. I had a 2005 dodge 2500 2wd and I got that sucker stuck 3 times, not due to deep mud, just due to slippery mud and the front end just buried its self with the Cummins weight.

Just to extend the conversation... I have had many 2wd's but at this point in my life financially I have made enough by selling houses, property and working my azz off that I will not buy any more 2wds because I don't care for their looks. Unless I get a little hooptie for good gas mileage.

I think redchevy should take the spare tire and jack out of all his vehicles and sell them. Why own something you might need someday.

I'm always for 4wd! The cost difference doesn't make sense if you have a truck and use it for a purpose! If you just want a truck to go to your white collar job, then you need a 2wd! We fished a championship tournament a few years ago on Lake Livingston when it was low... (Trailering Tourney).. It rained at about the time it was time to go to weigh in... The ramp was steep and there were a couple of trucks that couldn't make it up the ramp! We had to pull 3 trucks up the ramp! If not for 4wd, a lot of us would've been DQed! If you need it, its there when you need it!

4wd will cost you a heck of a lot more than spare and jack.

My comment has nothing to do with cost. He said why have something just because you might need it someday.

Here is the thing. None of us is ever going to use our 4WD enough to justify the cost differential between 4WD and 2 WD. We will get some of it back because our 4WDs are worth more than 2WDs on the open market or trade value, provided you don't beat the h*ll out of it. I don't know why anyone with a diesel would not want 4WD, cause they get stuck on dry pavement. The fact is, if you use a truck for something other than commuting, you will need 4wd at some point. If you like the security of knowing you are more than likely never going to have to call a tow truck to pull you out of something, then buy it if you can afford it. If you want to live dangerously, then don't. A word to the wise among those that have 4WD. In bad weather you are just as stuck as the guy in front of you when the road is blocked because some idiot in a 4 wheeler thought his front wheel drive car could go anywhere a 4WD could.

I would support that for most people, a lot of people wont change a tire men included. They will ride on the flat/rim till they get to discount or AAA. Oh and did you know some new cars now don't come with a spare? I have one and wouldn't be without it. Comparing a spare tire to 4x4... wow what a comparison! juggle

A spare is practical, 4x4 on every truck not so much. Im not against 4x4, I own one and use it. I think its stupid for a banker that lived in the city works in the city doesn't off road, and doesn't venture off the pavement and doesn't live in snow country to buy a 4x4. If he has the money its every bit of his right to do so and I support that, but that doesn't mean that im going to recommend to someone asking about what they should get should be a 4x4.

My dad gets by fine in a 2wd diesel truck and it spends more time off pavement than a lot of 4x4 trucks I see every day. Yes its been stuck before. I drove a 2wd pickup for a long time never had trouble at a boat ramp, even ones others routinely told me you needed 4x4 on(learn to drive). Yes its been stuck to because I did something I shouldn't have. If you think 4x4 is the be all end all ill never get stuck... your wrong, guess we should all spend a couple grand on a 10k lb winch and a 1/4 mile of cable hammer

I agree people that don't ever leave city streets have no use for a 4/4. The op asked about it for launching on some ramps. Obviously he uses his truck more than driving around downtown. Comparing a 4/4 to a spare tire was the biggest stretch i could think of. I don't think comparing a soccer mom to an outdoorsman is a very good comparison either.

last time I checked ramps are paved and LS or a locker is a heck of a lot cheaper than 4wd. One reason I say a lot of people do not need 4wd is they do not use it and that will eventually lead to problems. During summer I may not use it 10 miles per month. Put I do make sure that I get a couple of miles in and I cycle through 4hi, 4lo, and 4lo with the locker engaged. How many people actually do this.

Boy, we must be bored to dicuss something so stupid as "Yahoos that buy 4wd and don't need it". Maybe we can discuss people who buy farm plates for their truck and it's never even left pavement.
