Today's report: Surface action is starting, mostly smaller fish on the surface but big mags sitting underneath them. I caught doubles for an hour straight today until I got bored. Bait was a 5/8oz chartreuse hand made slab with a bright colored crappie jig about 18" above it. The depth was between 18-20' today and fish were stacked solid from the bottom to the top.

How do you get down to those big ones? Last time I was out on Lavon was a party of 5-8 inch schooling babies. Couldn't find the parents! I think the main reason for my success with the larger sandies is due to the fact that I'm using a size 1 single hook on my slabs. The smaller yellows and sandies have a hard time getting that bigger single hook in their mouth, and unlike a treble hook it doesn't snag anything that slaps at the lure. These are the slabs that Carey and I use, 5/8 oz chartreuse, mine are not as pretty as Carey's as I'm still perfecting getting a good powder coat on them and making them come out smooth from the mold, regardless of the imperfections they are still effective.

One seat open for today's Sandbass trip.
Nick Henderson has been taking trips for me, during the Sandbass run in the creeks. Now he has joined me on the lakes. If you want to go with him, make sure you say so in the comment box. Same rules apply in his boat: fish gaurenteed.
Tip of the day: I have said it many times. Increase the size of your hook and make it a single hook as well. To many baby's In the lake now. Your small treble hooks are the size of the bait the baby fish are eating. So they latch on. They are not trying to eat your slab that's bigger than them. They just want the shiny steele hook. Switch to brass color. If you only catching small ones, MOVE.
I have " MAPS "of all the locations the Sandies live in. Where you ask? -Within this thread. Just have to read to find it. I show you every spot they should be in. I don't hide where I catch the Sandy's on the main lake. I give you all the information you need to catch them. The only reason you should be calling me or Nick, is because you don't have a boat. I take that back, two reasons you should be calling us is to book a trip because you don't have a boat or to call me and tell me you found them so I can come join you!
If you see me out there catching them, join me, just stay about a boat length away from me and have fun. If I'm Crappie fishing- stay off the lake and give me room! lol.
Update: boat is full for today's Thursday trip.

Is there any night fishing tips you could give us as far as what to use? I've been on them before only to get shut down after it gets dark...

Do yourself a favor and book a trip with Carey or Nick. You will learn so much and will successful on Lavon. Worth every penny and even better when you split a trip with a friend.

Fishing at night you need to have your lights out at least 30 minutes before it gets dark. You want them to gravitate towards your boat and stay there till you're done. They will usually bite till around midnight then shut down, then they will resume around 4 AM to light. Either scoop up the large glass minnows in your light, Castnet the threadfin shad, or bring minnows. Pay attention to your graph and put your minnows right in their faces. Most of the time they were holding your boat at a certain depth, coming up eating the minnows in your light. Don't use anything over 8 pound monofilament. Highly recommend using 4 pound or 6 pound fishing line. You're fishing for 2 to 3 pound fish so just double the size monofilament for the targeted species.
Knowing where the fish are before the sun goes down helps out a lot.
Last week when the east wind came in it shut the lake down. Fishing was awful. Every once in a while you might get lucky land on a school but they were long gone by the time you dropped on them. Should get back to normal as the south wind comes back.

. Unless I get two more people to go tonight at 5:30 PM it looks like I will stay home. If you would like to go email me, p.m. me or text me to reserve a seat.
We will launch from Collin Park at 5:30 PM trip lasts until dark. Chasing sand bass. $75 per person. I only need two more people, I could take up to three.
