That's great at elite events and tourneys where you have less than 50 boats. But what do you do for the McDonalds big bass when there are 2500 boats? You'd need either 2500 reliable volunteers or you'd have to pay that many people for 16-24 hours of work.

There was a tournament trail around a few years back where the fish were laid and measured on a vinyl sheet and a picture was taken of each. That works.

Our club tournaments are draw events where you have 2 anglers in the boat. Here we measure, record and released on the spot. All inches are changed to pounds using a scale that was provided by TPWD many years ago.

And then there is the judge in the boat method.

Tournament directors that think outside the box will change their events to protect the fish only if it doesn't effect their bottom line. The rest hardly give the fish a second thought except if you bring one in with pink gills but it has one fin still moving. AHah no penalty.
Even though they know that fish will die.

Assessments for dead or dying fish should be raised in the summer time to a pound off per fish if you really care about the them.

There are many ways it could be done to protect the bass. Particularly when the water temps get over 80.

Let's say you monitor your livewells closer than most. You pump in 88 degree surface water and put fish in it. Then you cool that water to 75 degrees with ice and add Catch-n-Release. Then you attempt to maintain that cool temp throughout the day while attempting to manage ammonia and dissolved oxygen levels. Then you take those 75 degree fish, haul them up to weigh in, stress them some more and release back into 88 degree water. I wouldn't be surprised by 100% post-release mortality within two days, given these conditions. Tournaments (if at all) during this period should be required to use the MLF format or have a paper tourney, imo.

Well said, sir. Fisheries Biologists have been telling us this for years. Some listen, some don't.

Very easy to go to a paper tournament except use cell phone pics, in the picture show inches along with the date baton to verify caught day of, problem solved.

Paper tournaments are good. They work best for individual tournaments with two people randomly paired in the boat. For honest people (like all of us), there isn't an issue. But if you're fishing as a team, cheating (2 for 1 discount on the fish) is a little easier this way.

The issue I have is releasing fish that are sure to die. You caught them eat them or fillet them and give them to someone who will, they are good! Don't waste them! This to me is the same violation as wanton waste when hunting which is shooting game and leaving it to rot instead of finding it and eating it!

See you on the lake and have a great day!

Hell, in all seriousness, it's better than having 100 floaters around your ramp in the morning. . .

There were three club tournaments at the lake and to my knowledge, there were zero fish caught zero fish weighed.

Metroplex Bass Club Open Tournament - It's my understanding that this was on Bridgeport Saturday and fish were weighed.

Montecello is really hot right now. Plants running. We need to change. Catch a fish weigh it, Text in pic to director who is constantly updating a board. Spy boats following with long range cameras,,,,If you cheat is lifetime ban. I just made that up. But we need to change.

it is a fish and it is a sport. the last I checked bass are not going extinct. if you don't like it then don't fish or get on the forum. people like you all can find problems about everything and get everything banned. soon we wont be fishing period. I also don't think you realize just how many bass are in a 12k acre lake.

That's why we have a forum. To discuss topics of interest to anglers. This one interests me and I believe there is a better way when temps are high. If you don't like it then don't reply. Folks like you try to defend a practice without offering any solution other than there are plenty of bass and it's a sport.

That is my point! For me the fact that fish die in the summer when you catch them is not the issue. The issue is being wasteful so chow down or as Mulholland suggests give them to someone who will eat them! Don't just throw them back knowing they will die in a day or so, that is irresponsible!

Fresh fish
Hushpuppies
taters
Cold beverage of your choice

What is wrong with that??

See you on the lake and have a great day!
