I've had several - There are no steering resistance adjusters. If it is tight to steer -something is wrong:
Steering Cable has jumped one of the sheaves under the foot pedal
The bearing in the middle of the shaft has gone bad (dropped the bearings)
One of the steering cables is coming apart inside the sheath

If you check all these, you will probably find the problem.

One more thing -and this may be common knowledge, but I had to learn the hard way:
When you latch the motor into the cradle - what position is your foot pedal? If it is hard "toe down" or "Heel Down" you are stretching the [censored] out of one of the cables -it will give up pretty soon.
The fix:
Just before you latch that motor down - loosen the big knob just underneath the "Head (top)" of the motor so it will rotate back & forth - watch what your foot pedal does (it goes up & down)
Tighten the big knob down with your foot pedal within its normal range (NOT heel or toe down)
Every time you stow it -make sure the prop is aimed the same way

No more steering problems!!!!

Take the foot pedal and "untwist" the wire sheath going to the trolling motor. Sometimes, when the cables get twisted in this way, it makes them hard to steer.

This, you are close to a cable breaking.
