Is it better to just find fish with electronics or to find active fish by catching them...

Good point in that we all go to catch. Ultimately, finding fish using electronics is not worth much unless they are then caught.

I read Buck Perry's book many years ago but don't remember the part about a 2-2.5 # bass seeking the deepest water in an area and very inactive. I recall him saying that about big bass but not small ones.

Another thing about finding fish on sonar vs with trolling, you have no idea what kind of fish you are looking at.

That "school of big inactive bass" often turns out to be something else.
