casting:
Buddy of mine used to fish DD all the time. He could hit, or nearly hit the opposite wall. doubt he had more than 100 bucks total in his rod/reel... since at no time did he ever have that much to spend..
he was all of 5'10" and 150 lbs. All muscle.

it ain't the R&R, its you. smile

I forgot to mention, my budget is around 100-150$ not 1000-1500$

In that price range I'd probably say Penn Battle II in either the 4000 or 5000 size and an Ugly Stick rod.

Check out the Penn combos. Bought my bro-in-law the Penn Fierce/Penn Prevail combo for his beginner setup and he's caught plenty of big stripers on it this year. B

How are people throwing 2 oz bucktails with 12 ft heavy rods. Most 12 ft rods are rated for throwing lures 4 oz+. They can launch those babies far.

timbertoes, you are reading but not comprehending. They can smash a pencil popper against the center wall with a 12 or 13' rod and reel set up that is under $150. They are all muscle too. They do not want to tear their shoulders and elbows up where they have to have surgery to fix them. They spend the extra money for the more expensive gear because it does not wear their joints out like the heavier less expensive equipment. Sure, you can get by with a rod and reel set up that costs less than $150.00, but you are going to tear your joints up when you do it. The question is do you want to be 65 and still able to hit the center wall with lighter gear and catch a bunch of big stripers or do you want to be watching others do it because your shoulders and other joints are too messed up to sling it out there?

All they are saying is with the lighter gear, they can cast it the minimum 100+ yards, keep fishing for more than 8 hours straight, and not irritate their joints like the heavier gear does. It is a choice of spending a little more and being able to fish a lot longer. All they are saying the money is an investment in prolonging their being able to do this type of fishing.

A key phrase in your post is "used to."
