It's a bad connection in the wiring at one of the connections or the big foot switch contacts are scored which either means disassemble and file the contacts or replace.
I would put my money on the big foot. Scoring occurs on contacts every time the contact opens and adds up over time.
2nd option corrosion at one of the connectors.

Had a similar problem and it turned out to be a bad connection in the foot control.
