This is all great info for dual axle, but single axle is a different story. I had to do some work on a trailer hub once on an older single axle, and getting that thing jacked up properly and securely was a beast of a process.

my best input is when you get a free minute, try and change one of your tires so you know what you're dealing with when, yes when, it happens.

Just a little preventitive maintenance. If you haven't had a flat then the last time your wheel came off was when the tire was replaced. Most of the time they use an impact wrench. Do yourself a favor and go out and loosen your lug nuts and torque them yourselves. Trying to break lug nuts can snap them right off. Then it doesn't matter if you have a flat your not going anywhere. At least for us single wheel trailers.

Glad I saw this thread. I know someone who until today carried only a 4 way and thought they would jack up a single axle with a scissor jack.

I'm interested as well. From this video it doesn't look bad, though I'd worry about it raising up squarely or not overshooting the apex:

Don't overlook checking air pressure in your spare tire as well. I've seen 2 different guys have a blowout and go to put their spare on only to realize it was flat. Many people overlook checking spare tire air pressure when checking the others in use. I even keep tabs on pressure in my spare under my truck.

All good points so far!
One thing I would add is if you don't carry a floor jack and just expect to use your trucks jack that you verify that the jack will get under the axle when the tire is flat. Had this happen to me with the bottle jack my 7.3 came with. ended up pulling up on a curb to get the tire off the ground to change it.

My spare had never been off, I replaced my tires regularly. When I finally needed to take the spare of it was rusted into the lug nuts. I had to use a saw and replace the lugs

I carry a floor Jack and a 4way in my truck no problem. Here Here! I do too. Had 2 different blowouts one at 65 MPH, Blew out the fender liner and all of the wiring from the fender back all had to be replaced. I have a floor jack and 4-way in both Pickups and also one in the wife's car. You can get a decent one that will do the job at Walmart very reasonable.

I just bought a new boat (to me 2012) and last weekend I was going to put a locking lug nut on each tire. I found out the 4-way breaker bar I had always used was too thick to attach to my lug nuts which are recessed into the wheel. The four way in my wife's car was a thinner metal so I switched them out. If I had not tried to do this I would never have known my wrench was too heavy duty to fit inside the recessed lug nut holes until I really needed it.
Then I found that the locking lug nuts I had were too thick (diameter) to fit in the wheel rim holes for the lug nuts.
Back to the drawing board.

Good post. Another item to consider is carry a spare hub. I got mine at Northern Equipment for about $40. Last month a guy's trailer was out of commission with a bad bearing. My hub fit his trailer, so I sold it to him for what I paid. He was a happy dude that he could get his boat home. A hub can be changed out in not much more time than it takes to change a tire if you have the proper tools. http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/category_trailers-towing+trailer-bearings-hub-sets+hubs

I always carry this items floor jack, breaker bar,4 wheel lug wrench, spare hub, wood block, tire plugs kit, air tank, and always check my spare tire at least 2 or 3 times a year. and also carry extra lug nuts and grease gun.
