This is a diagram of the 1999 Mercury 225 EFI that i have. It has both stator and alternator. The alternator has a built in voltage regulator with a set point 14.2 or 14.5 ( i can't remember ) to prevent over charging.
The OP's engine is a 2001 and has the same set up. smile

I suggested this because when the belt broke on mine i could not get above 4000 RPM's and would only do about 30 MPH. The motor has injectors, PCM , ECM's , electric pump on VST and the stator alone would not produce enough voltage after the motor running with out the alternator drained the battery down. Just a suggestion smile

Yes the stator is for the ignition only. I have seen the 100amp fuse blown on the alternator and the motor still run fine until the battery voltage drops enough to effect the ECU`s.

That's why anything on tha "'lectronic" motors, without tha right instrument's and/or diagnostic equipment, is jus gonna be a guess unless its jus blatantly obvious... main reason I like tha ole timey (like me) switch box stuff......gl with it.

Have seen even those "computer motors" what I call them , have a problem that diagnostics can not isolate. I have customers calling me and saying the dealers will not work on my old boat. One 2 weeks ago was a 1997 200hp Merc. I think the dealers tech`s want to plug and get paid more because it is quicker. I was quoted 225.00 just to plug diagnostics up on a 2012 90hp Evinrude e-tec.
