Are the gates open? How is the fishing? Are then gates staying open or on a schedule?
I planned a vacation there several years ago. I had no idea that they shut the gates on a schedule and there was not a drop going over the dam. First time in my life I had ever seen that happen. I was pretty darn disappointed.
That's why I ask those questions. I want to go there some day and fish the spillway.

save ur gas and stay home. nothing there but stinky poo and ghosts Grandpa, there are a couple of places on the Corps of Engineers site where you can try to verify they at least have the generators running. The link below shows the elevation of Red River below the dam. Normal elevation is 4.60 when nothing was on. The flow or cfs tell you how much water is flowing. Last week it was 19 cfs when no generators were on. When Shawnee Creek was flooding into this area after a 5" rain, the elevation rose but release was 19 cfs. COETD below Denison Dam. The link below tells you in real time if the generators are running. Hydropower generating data. I believe the 9K-10K is pretty much the max the generators can release. Release of water much higher than that may mean the floodgates are open. They do have a disclaimer on the page that states the information shown may or may not be correct. It's government work. They make mistakes. Now you are going to need to get a proper rod and reel to fish down there. The poor folks version from Diawa is the Emcast. Emcast longcast rods. I beieve the 2nd and 3rd 11' rods were the preferred ones. Believe me the $68.00 for the rod is a very good price. I do know two of the young men who build their own rods and the blanks alone cost a quite a bit more that this rod. Scroll down to the Emcast Sport ECS5500 longcast reel in the link below. Diawa Longcast reels I would probably go with the ECS6000 just because of the amount of line it will hold. You do want to use 20# test braided line which will allow more line of your reel and fewer breakoffs resulting in loss of lures. You are going to need to cast it at least 100 yards. Now moonriver, WilsonBiddy, and others can advise you of better set ups that are fairly new. They need to keep in mind you are a senior citizen like me with no money. There may even be someone who has a retired rig that is good and will set cheap. They will also let us know if there is some new stuff that is cheaper for us poor folks but is light weight but strong enough to do the job. Does anyone know if Mr. Hall is still alive? Stephen and I were talking about him the other day. He was well into his 70's back in 2007 but was in great shape physically and was a very good fisherman. We always enjoyed talking to him when he was there.

Oh, there is a place in DFW that has or used to have these rod and reels in stock. I forget the name of the place but others know which store I am talking about.

This page, their flood control page states they are releasing a total of 13K cfs. They need to correct their data for the cfs for below the dam. It is not what they state their and the elevation has to be higher if both generators are pumping and the flood gates are open on low. As near as I can figure it there is more or less than 7500 cfs being generated and the other 5500 cfs is released by the floodgates. You really have to search all over to find information. Correction, I found where there is 9.5K released by generators and 3.5K by the floodgates. Flood control data

They need a couple of dam cams down there. I'd never get any work done.

Our local news had some video of it during their broadcast. They will not put on their website until tomorrow. You can livestream the broadcast and kten.com and maybe they will show it again.
