Is fishing below the spillway over this time of year even though I think they will start to release mass amounts of water? Last time we got a report that the spillway was flowing hard but no one was there. Dose anyone know where the fish even come from? The river or the water rushing out of the spillway? I heard that they do come out of the spillway.

Speciesfisherman, I think fish below dam doesn't come from above the dam but from the river below it. Water below dam is rich in oxygen with which fish feel comfortable. Also fish (and small bait fish) migrate upstream and will (have to) concentrate at below the dam. Whether this migration is daily is unsure to me. Tight lines!

So basically the fish population will go down as people fish the spillway more? I mean this spillway has been hammered hard for 4 weeks in a row. The fish population is getting depleted pretty quickly i assume.

The way I understand it is they come from both above and below the dam.
No question they come upstream as the dam starts to flow. The flow creates oxygen, the bait fish love the highly oxygenated water. The predator fish follow. But I also suspect that the majority of these fish are catfish that come up from the Brazos.
I was told that a lot of the hybrids being caught had marks on them from going through the gates. So I suspect the majority of the hybrids and whites are coming from the lake. This would make sense, if the flow is cut off or slowed then less fish would be coming through the gates and the overall numbers would be depleted.

I would not worry about too many fish there, at times it seems they are gone, but believe me there are plenty of fish to go around for everyone there! lots of fish get passed down the system as water flows. Fishing will be really good once the rains subside and water some what clears, look out! plenty of bait fish lost, and injured, brings big predators around!

There are still plenty of fish under the spillway with plenty of white bass, hybrids, catfish, and gaspago. We went Tuesday when it was pouring but trust me the fish are biting especially whites and catfish ranging from 1-10 lbs. I've never seen baitfish so thick in all the years we've fish there.
Tight lines!

Lake level is 245.5. 7.5 ft above normal. This is the highest it has been since 2005. Lots of water to be released.

Dose it take a couple days before the fish start to gather around the spillway?

Dose it take a couple days before the fish start to gather around the spillway? Not at this point. The dam has been flowing almost non-stop since the beginning of the year. If the dam were closed for a long period of time it could take up to a couple of weeks, depending on the release rate.

I went on Friday down to somerville. Only caught three fish at the spillway. Other people were not doing so well. Fishing was poor. I went to rocky creek park to camp over night caught 7 hybrids on the tent camping area using swim baits. Then went near the boat ramp and caught about 30 gars using pieces of hybrids from the filets. Gar were small but very fun to catch with my and my buddies.

Went to Birch this morning....boat ramp parking lot is about the only thing above water. Fish cleaning station has about a foot of water in it. Checked the flow early this morning and it was at 1097. Checked right before I left to go fishing about 11 or so and it was at 1592. Got one little bite fishing (but did not really expect to catch anything anyway) by the cleaning station on CJ's. The sidewalk that I was setting on yesterday is now under water about a foot. Guess someone was getting to much water somewhere down south cause the gates are only open at 492 now and the level is at 9.85 high. Hope they stay closed for another month.....catfish spawn is almost here if not already.....can you imagine the spawn in all the shallows if it stays up and what next year's fishing would be like....Hope the gates freeze up and get stuck so they can't open them any more !!

We got 3 inches of rain in Brenham, the downstream areas really got pounded. Water is in areas I have never seen it before. No question the spawn could be ruined. Let's hope it's a while longer before the spawn begins. With more rain in the future forecast they will draw the lake down as quickly as possible.
