My eight yr. old daughter asked me to take her fishing at the last minute on Saturday so we proceeded to ask if it was ok with my wife. Wanted to leave the house around 5am Sunday morning but we kinda overslept. We made it to the spillway parking lot around 8:30am and didn't started to fish until around 9am.

There were a lot of boats on the lake today so I hope everyone had a fun and safe time. The spillway looks like a ghost town compares to the last time I was there, granted there were still about a couple dozen people fishing both sides. Fishing was fairly slow overall with mixed bag of whites and hybrids that I saw. There were a lot of catfish around 1-3lb caught if you were targeting them or using crawfish.


It was foggy on Hwy 290 approaching the Brazos River west of Hempstead around 7:30am or so. It looks pretty cool since there
were several distinct layers of fog.




This is the first hybrid of the day that my daughter caught on live shad. It went just a little over 22".


True to her word, she not only caught the biggest fish but 2 of them that measure over 22". My hybrid is the smaller of the three. LOL!

Overall, the fishing was fairly slow, but the time spending fishing with my daughter was priceless!

Fished for catfish sunday evening with a couple of buddies, fishing was very slow. Only thing we landed was a gar. Besides that only one other bite. We were doing really well at this spot a couple of weeks ago, im not sure why the bite stopped. Any crappie reports?

Went out to the lake Sunday morning, arrived at about 5:30am. The shad moved in at first light, very heavy for about an hour or so. We wound up with 6 catfish no whites or hybrids. Not sure why, maybe the timing, moon phase or barometer was not right. Bait was plentiful. With the shad still shallow on the bank early I don't think whites and hybrids are done from the bank yet.

The big hybrids might be chasing shad up into the creeks early in the morning at this time of year. It would be worth a try.

As high as the lake is now the Yegua can be accessed pretty easy. There should be some crappie up in the creeks as well. Even the smaller creeks should start to have a few crappie in the them soon, if not already.

I might have to try the yegua soon for crappie, do you fish closer to the lake or newmans bottom area? What kind of setup would you use this time of year?

I usually launch at Newman's bottom and kayak down to Wolf Pond. There are a few deep holes near structure that hold fish. Wolf Pond is usually a very good place to fish.

I have also seen people catching them in deep holes on Nails and Jardelle creek.

I use lightweight rod, 6 lb test line and jigs. Usually chartreuse colors.

Lake level is 240 ft. 2 ft above normal. They closed the gates due to the recent rains. Ben always says the best fishing below the dam is as soon as they close the gates. The fish pool up for a short period of time and it's easy catching. I saw this first hand a couple months ago.

Is Rocky Point over near Nails Creek State Park? I've heard this mentioned several times but I can't seem to find this when I'm out on the lake.

Yes, you can wade fish at Rocky Creek.

Lake Level is 242 ft. 4 feet above normal. Release rate was lowered to 1000 cfs with the additional rains received in the area.

Just looked at the level this morning.....up over 5 feet now....not sure of the release...was releasing just under 800 yesterday afternoon.

Yep, the lake is 5.25 feet above normal and only releasing 383 cfs currently. Lots of rain in the area over the last couple of days.

Lake level is 244.4 ft. That is 6.4 feet above normal. Release rate is 389 cfs.

I haven't been out to the lake but the landscape must be looking incredibly different. The fish are bound to be spread out all over.
