How can a largemouth bass recognize a "heat signature"? They do not possess the ability to see in the infrared spectrum.


Catching a big bass or a few big bass can happen purely by accident. Just go fishing.
If you want to catch them with regularity then apply a few basic principles to your efforts.

Fish waters where good numbers of big bass live.

Understand each lakes differences and locate the sweet spots where and when big fish feed. Timing can be one of the most critical factors. Early, late, mid afternoon on the hottest day or the middle of the night. One lake may produce excellent results in shallow water where another will require you to search the depths. Be prepared for either and anything in between. No one can tell you where these spots are going to be. The usual suspects, channels, breaks, contours, humps, points and blah, blah , blah are good places to start but huge bass can be and are regularly caught in the most ridiculous locations.

Be careful with boat control. Don't go in "like a bull in a china shop". This is often overlooked and a big reason that some anglers struggle.

Use good quality equipment that can handle the task and wont fail you in the moment of truth.

Sharpen your hooks and do it correctly!

As far as baits go, its not he particular bait as much as it is the presentation. This is the most important factor of all if you want to catch a lot of big bass. The most basic baits will produce well if you use them correctly. The situation that is in front of you will dictate what type of bait to use and how to use it. It doesn't need to be the latest greatest whatever with your HD Touch 3D imaging 12"screen Hydroblaster setting you up.

It's not that complicated but like anything else you need to find that zone and find your success.

How do you consistently catch fish that are not giants but are in that mid--range where you can catch 4 or 5 a day.
pf catching 1-3 lbers is "normal", how do you zero in on those mid-range fish ?

Put yourself where they are and be there when they are catchable. Use the right equipment and baits for the situation.
A few tips aren't going to answer the question for you and consistently put you on fish. It will be time on the water, a committed approach to learning about bass behavior and lots of trial and error that will teach you.

Large Bait and slow presentation has worked best for me, although spinnerbaits and chatter baits slow reeling and stopping it have worked as well and in deep water big magnum flukes with a half OZ weight dragging it through brush or timber on humps is also a good idea and has been key to. Usually C-Rig with a big Bait like a 12" Power worm off some sort.

None of us can consistently catch 4 or 5 fish a day in the 5-7 lb. range on a public lake. We'd be on TV if we could. I'd say fishing big baits at night near deep water gives you the best chance.

why is it that one person,,, given similar abilities as the next,,,, does not catch as many or as big of fish as the next ???

I've caught big bass on both small baits and big baits as well as dd22's.....

Most have come while fishing slow.... Either summer or spring. I usually fish slow and I'm usually fish soft plastics. No better than anybody else but that's how I've had luck catching some dadgum donkey slaunches! Mostly luck though...

Location is key, fish of a similar size stay together. A 7lber is not going to feed with a 12" bass, he's going to feed on that 12" bass.
