We had several gar swimming around us this morning where we waded out to fly fish. They looked like they might be spawning as well, saw 3 of them really close together. Cool looking fish. I'd like to catch someday as well just never targeted them. I bet people fishing minnows catch them on occasion.

People used to fish for gar at the LOP spillway by snagging and bow and arrow. Not much of a fight at all when you snag one.

Yeah, they are spawning all up and down the creek.
I went to check it out up at Firewheel. Went up and down it a good ways looking into the water. The water is pretty clear, and I could see well with my polarized glasses. Only sign of life is gar and some minnows. A big rain might change things, but I think anything north of Miller is a waste of time until those dams come out. I've heard of tiny sand bass being caught, but they were probably born in the creek and just haven't left yet.

When are they supposed to be done with the construction . Not sure, but those dams were supposed to be gone by Spring. There's always next year.

Crazy short story .
Yesterday evening before sunset while fishing on 11, a fellow fisherman pointed and yelled snake. I looked down and there was a copperhead coiled like a cobra floating past. It was its own little raft. Looked to be 3 feet long. Weird. If it wasn't pointed out I would not have noticed. I guess it floated within a foot or so of me.
Other than that ...... two sandy keepers out of 10, 1 undersized Hybrid and I snagged a 3 foot gar that got itself off before I could drag it to the shore to unhook it.

it seems every fish is a hybrid until its landed.
see also is it a hybrid / I think its a hybrid

I have appreciated all the posts. Thought I would share where I have fishing and catching as I am done for this spring, due to upcoming marriage, and moving, plus bachelor party on Texoma striper fishing.
I have gone 3 times in this one spot, everyone seems to be fishing down stream of me, but they don't seem to have the same success. I caught 22 last night with 2 keepers. I don't think the whole is chalked full of keepers, but it has fish, and it's fun.
I have been parking down at Miller Rd, in the gravel parking lot on the southeast side. Walking down to NT9, following the path under the tree. It pops you out just above the split in the creek. I go down to where it widens before it merges. On the West bank it is steeper and also deeper. I throw an all white road runner up or down stream, didn't seem to matter last night.

Spot on LakeForkGroupie, i was there last night as well from about 5 to 8pm in the similar area... Caught 62 with one being a very nice sized hybrid (first of the season for me and unfortunately left my phone in the truck). Im using a fly rod with homemade clouser in varying colors of white/chartreuse, yellow/chartreuse, and pink/chartreuse; best being the pink/chartreuse. Dont know why more people dont fish Rowlett with a fly rod, im usually the only one with a fly rod there every time i go.

I had the red mazda in the parking lot, I was there 630-8 or so. I saw 3 guys walk out behind me, they had a cooler, no idea how they did.
I can't seem to have any luck in the fast moving current, but I tear it up in the slower side of the split.

Hey Lake Fork Groupie,
Looks like I accidentally was in your spot last week! LOL. Yes they are in there and plenty of small ones before you can get a few nice ones. I culled through eight to get two! Fun little place and I may try it again next week; if I can.

It's kind of hard to believe, but I think the fishing was better last year than it is this year. Didn't have to go through so many tiny fish to get a keeper then. Was hoping to get a heavy rain last night, but those storms missed us.

Well I was there Sat and Sun morning and Last night, seems everyone fishes just below the split, while you silently starting pulling through numbers to get some keepers. Just seemed no one was fishing it much. Well you should start calling it your spot. I think next year, I am going to start earlier and try and find some pockets lower on the creek.

you talk about it popping out before the split then you say that you go down to where it widens before it merges I am getting turned around in my head lol! it sounds like you are fishing between the split downstream and the merge up stream on the upper split?
I only fish on days that end in Y!
