Luck helps for a few, but consistently being good at something makes you more lucky. Yeah, I didn't mean to imply there is nothing more than luck involved in catching big fish. I'm no big fish expert, but I was born on the banks of Caddo and I've spent at least part of almost every weekend of the last 25 years on the water searching for bass. I think it was Ben Hogan who said, "The more I practice the luckier I get."

It depends on the time of year and what forage fish are feeding on at that time.
I've caught fish over 10 pounds on a variety of baits, all the way down to a 4" sinko
If you want to target A BIG FISH that's a lot differnt than wanting to find schools of larger (4-8lb) fish.
Totally differnt tactics and strategies involved,
Most, including myself, don't have the patients to fish for 1 or 2 bites every 10+ hours that your true giant hunters fish for... That sounds about right to me. Doug recently you had at least some patience with that giant you caught- lol! I try to be a big weather watcher- for me there are about 20-25 prime days each year where the odds are better. Any day could be the day but it's an odds thing. Fish the right place at the right time with confidence courage and concentration. If any of those 5 things aren't right- fix it. I have a good friend who has caught a lot of big fish and he always tells me about the days in certain times of the year where it's the "perfect storm". He also taught me knowing the areas of a given fishery that most likely hold the largest population of big fish and to target these areas during these peak times. The Friday I caught the biggest fish I've ever caught out of Hubbard set up like this and I was simply fishing an area I had caught or been in the boat when 4 fish over 10 pounds have been caught in the past 5 years. I wasn't really "fishing for big fish", so luck definitely was a factor for that day. The strange thing was the following day there were several large fish caught across the state. I think the combination of the moon phase and a slight warming trend after some bitterly cold weather were a huge factor in those couple of days. My personal best was on Feb 28, 2008 and this was also the first day of a warming trend close to a favorable moon phase as well. In my opinion, there are just certain times when the biggest fish in an area are catchable, and unfourtently I'm of the opinion most of the time the true big fish aren't really venerable to being caught. That's why it's a huge challenge, IMO....

Location, location, location, that's the key then presentation!!!!!! Period This. I have caught many big bass and none of them have come off a "big bass bait" most were from a finesse worm, trap or chigger craw.
