I am headed out tomorrow morning for the first time in many years without a FF. I had intended to rig one up on the yak I am taking out tomorrow and go fishing Thursday, but then the weather forecast changed and I am forced to do the unthinkable. I am going naked. Going without a fish finder is bad enough! I'm thinking you might get a little cold without clothing! Not if you have a beard jerry! Can't touch this!!!

Understanding the habits of fish and how temp and conditions and how they affect the fish is far more important than the best of fishfinders. True they show the lake bottom and fish but if you are fimilar with the target species then you will be on the fish anyways. Just a thought.

I have one and it depends on where I am fishing if I use it or not. I came from California so when on the ocean it is nice to have especially with GPS. IT can get mighty foggy in a heart beat out there and you need it to get back in.
When crabbing I also used it for finding the correct depth as well as to mark where I put the traps.
I am also with Christian's remarks too as it does show the lake contours and you might also see a few fish down there, but as I say, "fish finders are an oxymoron."

The more I've learned about how to use mine and the better I've become at understanding what I'm seeing and what to look for, the more important it is, plus I enjoy site seeing what's under the surface. I don't leave home without it. For me its not important, I always have Deric to get my info from. . Seriously though I use it on lakes I don't know well or if I know I'm going to be looking for fish on structure. On lakes I know well and I know where they are, then I leave it off. I really don't like the noise it makes in the water. Example if I'm frog fishing on lakes I know really well, I don't think its doing me any good and its broadcasting a signal that the fish can hear. On the other hand If I'm trying to find that submerged school bus or that drop off, its critical. For me its a tool, not a hammer that I beat everything with (I have Lizzies for that).
