What's the deal with these Mexican lakes like El Salto? I always thought they were centered around trophy bass fishing and or catching a ton of 4-7lb fish. But after watching this video and them the one recently posted from a forum member who fish Picasoes.(probabally spelled wrong) thy didn't catch anything over 4lbs. So have I misunderstood these lakes as trophy lakes where when fishing during January-March u should expect to have a chance at a giant and at least catch quite a few 5-7lb fish or are these lakes more for the numbers 70-150 fish a day all around 2-3lbs? Seems weird to me to spend all that money to only catch small fish even if you are catching that many. I would imagine that these lakes are affected greatly by the Mexican gov dropping the water level to use for irrigation has that effected the big fish? Sorry if I seem like I'm putting down any of these lakes. Just curious because It seemed like these lakes used to he trophy lakes like Falcon.

I was kind of thinking the same thing. I just got back from a trip down to El Salto 2 weeks ago and it was a little disappointing. Although the day we got there was colder then normal and got a bunch of rain dumped on us which I'm sure shut things down a little bit. I went down there with an open mind...being from Minnesota I just wanted to catch something bigger then my personal best (5lbs 10oz) but really wanted something over 7lbs. I was kind of thinking we would at least get a ton of 3-5lbers but that was not the case. They were hard to come by. I went down with 3 other guys and each boat would get around 40-60 fish a day but most were in the 12" range which just shocked me. Each of us however did get a fish over 7lbs with my bro-in-law getting one pushing 9lbs. But in 3.5 days of fishing each of us maybe only caught a handful of fish around the 4-6lbs range. Our guides were very good and knew what they were talking about but said the cold and rain really shut things down. The guides for both our boats said if you really want a chance at catching the numbers a big fish to come down in June/July. That's when the water levels are low and they are stacked up. Water levels fluctuate on El Salto over 30-50ft.

Water levels do fluctuate annually on El Salto due to drawdown for irrigation needs. This alone does not negatively affect the fishing, it actually helps in many ways. The cold, hard rain you mentioned is what made the fishing tough. That rain at this time of year was unusual, but not unheard of. Make no mistake, this is THE premiere lake for big bass. I'll say it again, it doesn't matter whether you ride a mule or fly there in your personal G-5, whether you have shrimp and lobster or tacos for dinner, your success hinges on putting the right bait in the right spot at the right time. Unless you have the necessary lake knowledge to do so, the most important factor is your choice of guides. Without a knowledgable and experienced guide with recent time on the water, you are betting on pure luck and the historical lake reputation to make your trip a success.

I agree with Boeing. There is a reason people go down there to fish. Even know we didn't get the numbers of big fish we were hoping for the chance of getting into those big fish has me itching to get back down there. 2 of the guys we went with actually came back and looked at how much flights would be in July to go back down haha. I probably won't head back there this year but hopefully next year I can make the trip again. Go check out bigbassfishingmexico dot com if you want to book a great trip at a reasonable price. Here are a couple of the big fish we caught down there. Personal best 7lbs 3oz Big fish of trip...scale didn't work but guessing 8.5-9lbs My brothers 7-8lber. Again no scale My buddies personal best 7lbs 3oz Plus you can't beat this view
