Yup, the Sabinal is an absolute gem. I've fished rivers all over the country and its probably my favorite from early Spring into Winter. If you love sunfish, you will love this river. If you love fishing from a small Jon Boat or canoe or kayak, you will love this river. I have been hesitent to mention it before becuase it can't handle a lot of pressure like larger systems (like the Guad or the Brazos) can handle. But what it does do, it does better than anything else. If you catch a Longear there in their prime colors, you'd think you would have discovered a new species of sunfish. The Redbreasts, Bluegills and Guad Bass come from out of those grass beds and other ambush spots from 6' deep to smash a bait on the surface sometimes. And the scenery is unbelievable. The Sabinal is that one toy you don't want your younger siblings/cousins to play with for fear they would break it. Glad you guys got a chance to fish it.

Thanks "Jagg" for the reply. Texas is loaded with some really nice bodies of water to fish. I am going to try to a fish a few nice out of the way spots this up coming spring and summer. Side Note: You are right on about the Sabinal being a good sunfish river!

Thanks Curtis for the reply. You need to fish that river. Great Hill Country scenery and that river holds some nice fish. The water is clear and it has some nice grass beds. As for the trout. Me and Mike were the only two anglers there. As we were leaving two more anglers showed up and that was it. There will be trout to catch there up until late March. They will have lots of places to hide from anglers. River is spread out. I would imagine that warmer water temperatures will kill the ones that survive the anglers hooks as we get into the warmer months. As for fly fishing it looks like it would be a super place to fly fish. The Sunfish bite is pretty good during the warmer months. Heck Mike caught about five sunnies waiting for the stocking truck to arrive. One more thing. You need to eat at the Lost Maples Cafe in Utopia. Awesome place. Jeff fished there this past Saturday and got his limit in 3 hours. He said he saw lots of trout over by the spill way and by a launch. Getting the itch to go after em one more time. May just head up there this coming weekend.

If you go this weekend it may be pretty good. Going to turning cold Wednesday night. Gonna be on the chilly side for the next several days. Side Note: I would sure love to have a nice fried trout dinner this weekend. If I did not already have plans I would join you!

You can fish that river another couple of weeks and still have a chance on getting a limit. However with these warmer temperatures coming in all of those fish will be dying off. Great you got a late season limit. Good job.

Nice trout guys! You guys have made the trout circuit with some great results. That area has some beautiful scenery! Also that Lost Maples Restaurant sounds like an awesome place to eat. Got to love that Hill Country fishing.
Side Note: How far from Hwy 90 is Utopia. I see where the Sabinal River crosses Hwy 90 just outside of Uvalde. Have you fished that part?

Thanks "Gitter" for the reply. Utopia is only about 20 miles west of HYW 90 from Sabinal. I have fished that section a few times on my way to Bracketteville and Delrio. Good water but only caught small fish. I did have a nice Rio on line but it managed to get rid of the hook!
