I actually like cabelas but when I go into a retail sporting goods store I know what I want to buy. I think cabelas gun section is outstanding and 100 times better then BPS in grapevine . banana

I haven't seen the tanks in at Cabelas FW, but it is difficult to imagine any worse looking fish than in the tank at BPS on 288 in Houston.

At some point, somebody needs to address the fact that many of these places do an exclusively poor job of caring for their animals.

For many years I took care of a 60,000 gallon tank owned by an individual collector, and I'm certain at less than 1% of the money spent in these shops, and it looked absolutely AWESOME with fat, healthy fish.

We got enough trouble with the AR types to have the places we shop not caring for the animals they own properly.

From BPS, not Cabelas, but a buddy that once worked at one of their shops was fired over complaining the fish weren't being taken care of (he used to work for me, we take care of the fish we are responsible for). They told him, "We don't care about those fish, when they start looking bad we just get new ones."

I wonder if those fish came from Texas waters and if they were paid for. It would be illegal for us to catch and keep alive, sport fish from state waters, we are obligated to ill and eat tem. If I were to take breeding stock from Texas waters for my hatchery, I'd have to pay for them, hence my collection trips to Florida. There I was told, "You can keep your fish alive and take them where you want as long as you by a fishing license and do not have more than your legal possession limit."

We as consumers should force these people to care for their animals or not keep them on display.

All these fish were not moving, had fin rot,all the tails were tore up,all stomach were flat with big heads. The biggest fish had the head of a 10+ lb fish and the body of a 4lb fish. I made a post this summer when I went. The pictures don't do it justice. The sandbass were just as bad if not worse than the bass. The cqrp and drum seemed to be fine.

I hope the Cabelas employees have bad morale, not bad morals (sorry, couldn't help myself!)

In memory of my childhood friend Dan Sterling, who taught me at an early age how to catch bream with a hand-line, and who unknowingly hooked me on fishing for life.

You are wrong about the law in Texas. The TPWD website states basically the same thing as Florida. So if they were caught legally, you can take them to private water.

https://tpwd.texas.gov/faq/landwater/fisheries/

Quote:

Fish that are legally harvested from public water may be stocked in a private pond. Legally harvested fish are caught by someone who holds the required fishing license, observing all applicable length limits, daily bag limits, and gear restrictions. For more information on licenses and regulations, see the Texas Outdoor Annual.

I disagree. The reason the service gets to that point is because the managers don't care enough and don't listen to customers concern.

There's no excuse for bad service. I can't believe some people are justifying it (bad last year, slow after the holidays, etc...etc...). Do your job right and your customers will give you repeat business. Keep high standards in your service and products and customer base will grow. Do the opposite and you get people saying the stuff you read on this thread and not going back in your store. It's that simple.

How come I keep catching small fish when every product I buy is supposed to catch more and bigger fish?

For you guys that are so pizzed, just don't do business with them any more. After years of shopping in places I have come to realize that the problems some are ranting about are universal to all companies at some point or another, especially in retail. It cycles as their employees and mgmt turn over which is frequent. You could substitute bps academy, gander, Wal-Mart, or any other box store name into this thread, you can also substitute a few of the local favorites into it. Nobody is happy that it goes on but it happens. Newbie Fisher since its so easy and you have it all figured out I suggest you put together a program to teach all of us in the business world how to stomp out these issues. If you could I suspect you would not have time to post here cause you would spend all your time counting how damn much money you are making.

The Store Director is Steve Andognini. He can be reached at 817-337-2400.
The District Manager is Kevin Norwood, who use to be the Store Director and offices out of the Ftw. Store. He also can be reached at the above number.
Hope this helps!

This is true but you can find way better gun prices at gun shows in Ft Worth, and there many of them all during the year.

They just don't care anymore about anything that is what they say is ,Its in my nature, I have seen the ad on TV and signs up in the store. In my opinion the customers is their nature, we are the ones who give them a job, support the pay role . If they realized this they would stand behind their products, fix the customer service, put the cash lanes back in front of customer service that use to be there and get more product in the store, I mean come on, fishing season is fixing to get going and it looks like a ghost town in there , no rods and no new baits that are out and suppose to be the next best thing, just my two cents worth Has anyone met a deer that could read? The deer don't care that their food was planted by something that said C

Its no bueno, I haven't been in there since may 2012 but I couldn't believe poor their selection was, its seemed like the place had really gone downhill since it first opened, our local academy had a better selection/variety of items particularly in the fishing dept. but also in certain areas in the hunting side as well, there were some good deals in the bargain cave but the merch/packaging was old.

I agree with you on the bargain cave stuff, I don't know how true it is but I have heard that most of the stuff in there is returns, so is it really a bargain? Why was it returned in the first place, missing parts, doesn't work or what? And ifused or missing parts the warranty is probably null and void
