Hey guys,

Just a quick question. Has anyone tied or tried this type of fly.

I saw it in Fly Tyer magazine, Winter 2014. It has the how-to and material list, so that's not an issue. I was just curious if any of you guys have tied something similar. It's a size 4 or 8 and looks a whole lot like a roadrunner. When I flipped to the page I knew immediately it would tear up the rivers around here pretty much anytime of year. Also if anyone has fished with one, how did it cast? I usually use a 8wt but wasn't sure with the spinner, if it would be a nightmare. Thanks for any input.

TFF is home of the blade fly :-) Our own George Glazener was a pioneer in that field. Yes, it takes some getting used to casting, but is da bomb.

Looks like a killer. Unless you get crazy big with the blade or it gets really windy, I'll bet an 8 weight would handle it okay.

Most everyone in this part of the country is familiar with Charlie Cypert's Mylar Minnow - a kiler white bass fly.
I add a #00 spinner blade on a #4 Eagle Claw 60 degree bend jig hook - a very simple and effective fly and easy to cast.
Thanks Robin,
George

Scott, there are many variations of spin flies that are productive when spinner blades and small swivels are added to any type of streamer fly.
My idea as yours, was from the old Roadrunner type jig.
I called mine a Spinster but it is the spin system that makes it work.
Here's an old link that may be helpful:
http://www.danblanton.com/blog/category/authors/george-glazener/

I like to use 60 degree bend jig hooks because 90 degree bend jig hooks are designed for vertical jigging, whereas 60 degree bend hooks are designed for casting and retrieving.
The Eagle Claw 413 and 410s will run hook point-up and the bend acts as a lever, hooking the fish in upper mouth or side of jaw.
I love jig hook flies and I believe yours will be a winner.
Good luck and best wishes,
George

Love my spinners. Put them on just about anything from Boogers to Clousers to Mylar Minnows. Bass love em.

Awesome! Thanks for the replies. This will be my next project, and am excited to get things rolling. I think I will go with the 60 degree hooks too. Thanks again!

For vertical jigging, this lure should be good, for sure.

But I do have a tiny problem if using it for casting: the length of the blade, the swivel and the clip above the swivel is too long. They may tangle up with the hook when retrieving. It's just my personal opinion. I may be wrong.

Spinner blades??? On a fly???

I wouldn't be caught with one of those...

However, since I haven't posted in while, I might as well show what I tied last night:

And of course, if I did have a spinner on a fly, I would never, ever have more than one...

Uh... Obviously, I like spinner blades on flies. roflmao

Hey, I saw that Sonic Boom pattern when it came out. It looks tempting, but for me, there's a whole lot of extra work in that design. I tend to use simpler and easier to tie designs. But, I agree with George, I like fishing the 60 degree hooks better. (Of course, he showed them to me in another Fly Tyer article many years ago.)

Bottom line - Spinner blades are VERY effective for catching warm water fish.

Tie some of them and give them a try. I think you'll like them, whichever pattern you use. laugh

Also, I have not noticed much difference in how a fly casts with or without a spinner blade attached. Spinner blade flies are not difficult to cast.

Have fun!

Yours look super. I made lots spinners, but not on a fly yet. I need to do something soon.

Thanks Rex. I agree, I think I like the more simple approach like what y'all have shown. That's what I thought about originally, can I tie one on a clouser type fly? Another question then, since there aren't any places close for me to buy other than online, would these sizes still work for a clouser type fly in a size #4?...#0 indiana blade, #12 nickel crane swivel, #1 standard split ring. I'm new to this type of tying and don't want to order a bunch of stuff I won't use.

Thanks again for all the replies!
Scott

Yep, I believe Rex will agree....
JannsNetCraft has #00 blades, swivels, split rings, etc...
I would use "these sizes still work for a clouser type fly in a size #4?...#0 indiana blade, #12 nickel crane swivel, #1 standard split ring." if this is what I have on hand.

I agree with George's comments on the recommended sizes.

For reference, the fly in the picture is tied on a 1/0 EC 413 hook with a sz 0 Colorado blade, sz 12 Crane Swivel, and a sz 1 Split Ring.

When I started using spinner blades, the hardest part was dealing with the small split rings. I broke a couple of standard size split ring pliers before I found a pair designed to work with small rings. A good pair of split ring pliers are worth their weight in GOLD.

Here's what I'm using:

Good point Rex!
Those little #00 split rings drive me crazy even with a good pair of split ring pliers!

Now go beat that new OK striped bass record for Texoma stripers!
Best,
George
