from what looked penn sold out in 2006 and quality ever since has gone down. Dont get me wrong I have several old Penn reels and they were expansive but the have last a long time. the fish he said was about a 20lbs or so I was going to buy one my self till i did a little reading it seems that they sold out in 2006 and quality has gone down hill ever since know my older ones are great and still holding strong if it is true the were bought out by K2 which owns a bunch of other company to include sheakspear only the upper end real over 150$ are said to be still built in the old Philadelphia plant or at least that is what other forums are saying I love my Saltwateter Penns

It is what it is, ain't what it ain't but still buy some of their products and hope for the best while using them. Still think they are a little better than other stuff on the market.

I agree but if your dropping 70$ on a Penn dont think it is going to be what it use to be I am not saying they are bad reels i am just going of other peoples experience. When fist seen the Fierce reels i have to say i got excited and was going to buy on. I would have been seriously disappointed when it wasnt the quality that matched my older ones they may be good reels for the money he my had gotten a bad reel but unless it was on maid in Philly I dont think i will get it Abu makes great reals and you can get a good used one even cheaper

Fishing from the bank, I prefer the spinning reels and think that they handle casting a 6oz. weight better than a baitcaster. I also use the rod more than the reel to fight the fish so the drag is more of a buffer between the fish and the fishing line & rod IMHO.

I agree c..dawg.I am a big fan of Penn 9m/209m/(309 good but just too big) baitcast reels. They may not be the longest casting reel due to brass bushings /not bearings //but that what makes them tough and hold up well in salt water and abuse ..I got a bunch of them....Garcia Mitchel made a reel probably 60/70s vintage That was similar to the old Penns it had white end caps it was a good reel to.Just did'nt catch on .All above reels are work horse reels /geterdone kind ..And most parts are still around and repairable by anyone

I did not mean to sound rude or argue with you i was agreeing i should have been more specific on the bait casters. writing is not my strong suite if you are casting that much weight from the bank I am sure you are not going to settle for a 40$ real i know i wouldn't and since i dont I am sure you know way more then me about it. I did read that as part of the $1.6 deal when Penn sold out all the upper end reels 150$ above are still what they use to be and still Being made in the same plant but i am not 100% that is just what i have read I am sure it is true since they are consider the best of the best when it comes to saltwater fishing

It's all good sir, I learned that Abu Garcia also makes a line of spinning reels as well.

BPS CatMaxx were Good for the price but they've been gone for a while. I emailed BPS and they said they will carry them again in near future - getting redesign or new contract negotiated with manufacturer or something.
