When I was young and before they introduced Florida strain LMB's to Louisiana farm ponds pretty much always produced fish larger than the native species in the Louisiana public waters. Fish from the 6 to 8 pound range were often caught out of private waters. The native strains on public water 5 to 6 was about as good as it gets. Awesome catch for sure!

Good job - good bass!

In memory of my childhood friend Dan Sterling, who taught me at an early age how to catch bream with a hand-line, and who unknowingly hooked me on fishing for life.

Nice fish! A true bank beater's envy! I pond fish more these days than big water fish. I love finding ponds that have not had any pressure or precious little. Its a little like hunting when you are successful! Good job!

Well after 1 more fish on the deps slide swimmer, I lost it. I caught the fish, retied, and triple checked my knot and line then on the next cast, apparently the line got dug under it's self and broke on the cast sending the deps and 20ft of line into the middle of the pond. I had no Knicks in the line but I guess I casted so hard it broke 25lb PLine CXX. Oh well that's fishing.

Try 25 or 30lb# big game on those big baits... It's much more forgiving on any backlashes or sudden stops while in flight.. There's a lot of weight there and it doesn't take much to crack that whip!

Bassfisher317,
Great fish, congrats! Sorry you lost the bait, I've felt that pain. They aren't cheap and losing them never really gets easier to stomach.

If you keep having break off issues consider making the switch to braid. Neither I, nor my clients have cast off a bait in years. I've literally never cast a bait off on braid, ever. The feel is great, the hookups are solid, and the lack of stretch makes the movements needed to work the bait much smaller. I tie leaders to eliminate the visibility issues and have phenomenal success.
Its a huge improvement over mono, you should think about it.

Sorry about losing the bait. I haven't casted any of mine off yet but I'm sure it's coming. At least you got one good one to remember it by. Most my big baits are just getting a tour of the lake with no takers. Congrats on a pretty fish. You may look into the braid that Matt suggested. I have one rod rigged with braid, one with 25 big game, and 1 with 30 copolymer. I'm new to big bait fishing and I'm trying to see what I like best. I just worry about the leader knot breaking because I don't have much experience with it. I also feel like braid cost me a real nice fish that smashed a punker 10' from the boat because of lack of stretch to help absorb the annihilation. But maybe not, I gotta blame it on something. Good luck, hope you get a new bait soon.

I used to throw big game. Had several problems with it and some swimbaiter in Cali suggested PLine CXX and that was the only problem I've had with it. I may give big game another try though.
