Hard baits like a DD22 that really dig down deep. How often and/or I guess I should ask when, a certain time of year, to use this crank bait? Probably dumb question but, I'm a lot of things but bashful is not one of them. If I don't know, I'll ask thanks ya'll

Use deep diving cranks when the fish are deep and active.

I like to throw them all summer and in the dead of winter. My favorite way to fish them is through tree tops in 12-15ft of water during post spawn.

So many ways to use the DD22 not sure where to start. My favorite way is when they suspend over cover or creek bends and deep water humps.
This usually starts for me about mid May every year and last all summer. It also will get better as the summer gets hotter.
I have one tied on at all times cause you never know when you need it. It works great banging bottom in 8-14 ft pre/post spawn also.
I can bang it off a tree in 12 ft to 40 ft. The DD 22 is a bait that can work in so many different ways. One of my very best baits to catch a fish over 10 lbs.

Good advice. Is this a bait that will or more likely to produce a 'reaction strike' when the fish are inactive? I hadn't really thought of using it any other way other than 'digging' for the deep bite at it's maximum depth. thanks..

When the bite gets tough we do use it sometimes to get a reaction strike. It works both ways.

For a bait to be so simple, Its so dang hard to figure out. The last 3 months I have been giving it a try but always go back to my plastics.

Lee,
I am like Marc, I always have one tied on. I also throw it in 2' of water and get slammed, because they never see one in shallow water. Generally, in summer, winter, spring or fall, when the bass are located in 10' or more is the time most fishermen use them. Hope this helps. Tight lines, be careful and good luck.

I will say this about the DD 22 for Comanche 487 and others. The fish are really picky when it comes to colors but there is one that most always works everywhere I have gone.
That is a Smokey Joe. Cant remember the number on it but it is on the package. You just have to try different ones to see what they are on and sometimes it will surprise you on the color.
Last week here at Fork I graphed a group of fish on a break line in 16-23 foot they were suspended right over the drop off at its steepest point. I through a couple of different colors and nothing.
I knew they were there so I switched to one I have never thrown till that day. Bought it this year cause it was different.
Jelly Bean ! Sounds funny dont it. Well same fish in 10 cast on JB I had a 6.8 and a 7.1 and had another knock the fire out of it.
Could have caught more but pulled off of them to save for customers the next day. Sometimes a DD22 with out rattles work really good on high pressure lakes like Fork and Rayburn.

No, not from everything I read and watch. Seems they always (well, almost always) are looking for something different....depths/colors/etc. Thank you Marc for taking time to fool with this old 'amateur'!

I do change the hooks out on everyone I buy. I like my Mustad hooks.
I also throw the DD 22 on a 5/4/1 reel instead of a 6/4/1. Just less pressure when reeling. Also a 7 1/2 ft MH rod with 15 lb copolymer line.
Anytime Lee if I can ever help just let me know !

Yep, I agree with Marc on the copoly, too. I throw mine on a custom built 8' rod this made for big CBs. Works great! Copolymer is a GREAT line for cranking. I use McCoys Mean Green, Maxima and CXX (not so fond of the CXX, though, still prefer the McCoys Mean Green), GREAT LINE for CBs. It has a VERY low memory, a good amount of stretch and GREAT abrasion resistance. Hope this helps. Tight lines, keep safe d good luck.

Lee, go over to the dam at EM and get in 12 to 15ft of water and cast a 5XD or a 6XD parallel with the bank and let the bait bang off the rocks and you should catch some fish.
