That's a cool way to catch them! Never heard them called ghost shrimp...I always knew them as mantis shrimp. So what ya catch on them, pompano & whiting perhaps?

Fish,
Sharkanator bought the pump on the way down at Roy's bait n tackle for around $20. I think? There are plans on the net on how to build them. I think the most complicated part of the build is finding the right washer materials. I believe the pump we used had leather, PVC and rubber washers.

Lusca, I looked up Mantis Shrimp... While the shrimp we were catching do resemble a mantis, I think they are now refered to as ghost because of how soft and transparent they are? There are too many creatures to keep up with IMO. Also, it seems they look slightly different depending on where they live & are called by different names in different parts? So there is a good chance they were or have been called by Mantis Shrimp at some time depending on who and where it was. Always seen the holes but never knew there were shrimp down in them. Some where down a good 3 foot! I always thought the holes were made by small clams, crabs or fleas and some are. Makes me wonder what else is down there I did manage 2 suck up a long red worm I ate it before we got it on camera.

Dude you ate the worms!? JK! Seriously, you didn't eat the shrimp raw did you? I've heard that there are parasites that can be passed to humans from eating raw crustaceans. I used to get snapping shrimp, too in the sand. You can actually hear them often times from quite a ways away. I'm pretty sure "ghost" shrimp and mantis are one in the same. Just different colloquial names used in different regions. And like you say they're many different species of mantis shrimp. I caught some in the Keys that were a bright, almost neon, green.

I did some more looking, too. You're right that they're different than mantis shrimp. Looks like they're called sand shrimp, sea lice, or yabbies, also. Found a reference to them in the tpwd guide. They're Callianssid shrimp. I learned something new

In Oregon we call them sand shrimps. We would use it to catch surf perch, salmon, and sturgeon.

Ill go with "Sand Shrimp" too The & Hardhead, Gafftop Catfish love these little shrimp but you'll need a very small triple hook to use them for bait successfully.
