I have had very good sucess through the gills. But have seen hook removers that turn the hook around for easier removeal, espically on smaller fish. Just curious if any body has tried them.

Always remove the hook. I'd rather the fish bleed to death and die rather than starve to death.
No matter what has been around forever or any idiotic thoughts that hooks "magically rust out".....that just prolongs death.
And yes there is research to show that hooks do not magically remove themselves.
Good pliers and the through the gill technique work 90% of the time.

I have been using this method for years. It works great and the bigger the fish (and therefore his mouth) the easier it is.

This is a really timely post. I just caught a 2-3 lb. LMB this morning that I ended up doing 'field surgery' on to try and remove the partially swallowed Gamakatsu #4 hook on a Senko. Cut the hook out through the skin because I didn't think to try and run the hook all the way through (stupid me). Fish was pretty traumatized, and died after releasing back into the water. Felt really bad for the fish (yes I know I'm a wuss). I always release bass, so hope to lip them every time.
Will look into these tools, and try the "through the gills method' or 'cut the hook in two' method next time. Definitely needed something better than the short needle-nose pliers and scissors that I had with me.
Is this a common issue with worms/Senkos?
Regards,
Scott

And I found out that the 'DBARB' tool company is out of business. Need another tool solution.

I use a small bolt cutter from Menards Store. I think it's 8" long, works great and was only about $5. It will cut about anything. Hooks "used" to rust out when they were made of carbon steel. Modern stainless steel hooks last a very long time without rusting.Whenever possible I use the "through the gills" method. However sometimes the hook must be cut, additionally hooks out the side of the face or in an eye should be cut.

Going through the gills works very good. Just make sure to be careful, not to damage the gill plates. Most deep hooks could be avoided by a faster hook set. When fishing a plastic bait, set the hook as soon as they hit it. Don't wait to "feel it" again. Sometimes it just happens, but I bet most could be avoided if you set the hook quicker.
