Anchor Rope Depth Finder

Not a new idea by several centuries, but what I did was tie a knot every three feet in my anchor rope. Count the knots on the way down. Know the depth.

It aint to the inch perfect. Some knots came out an inch or two off of three feet. Stretch will make it less accurate. Drifting any while the anchor is lowering will also throw it off. But for the cost of rope I was going to use anyway, this is close enough.

Just use a separate marked rope with a good weight that will go straight down. I used the "dip my paddle straight down" method until I got a sonar.

And that works great, until the water is deeper than the paddle. wink

if your gonna do it oldschool like that. id get one of these and mark tit with ribbons every foot and write the measurment on each ribbon, and when done reel it up, Small compact easy. I already carry 50' or rope for anchor things would get messy if i had ropes all over the place.

used to use them all the time in construction they are cheap. just tie a big ol 1oz weight on the nylon string and drop her in and look at the closest ribbon on top of the surface and read its depth. idk may be silly idea but thats how i would do it.

We do something similar with our fly line that we teach with. Take a sharpie and mark it every 5 feet at 10 feet you would have one wide mark at 20 you would have two wide marks and so on. Works really well on anchor rope.
