I just recently went on a 36 hour tuna trip and I was using 80 test Power Pro braided line. Unfortunately I had my line break 7 times and lost some very expensive lures and yellow fin. I know it was not the fish or the rod and reel causing the problem but the line. What do yall feel is the best braided line to use?

i use the moss green power pro (20#)and have put some real strain on it without breaking. have had it break when rubbed on structure. i had some of the gold power pro that broke twice and when i inspected it, found fuzzy places so i threw it away. i've got fins wind tamer on one reel and so far i'm real happy with it.

Check your line guides on rod. I bought a brand new rod and my braid kept breaking, it had one eyelet that was like a knife.

Rub the inside of the line guides with a Q-tip, if there is a crack or snag it will pick up the cotton hairs. I have seen a number of tips that looked perfect have a small crack or chip in it that will shred up braid in a heartbeat.
I've also had PP fail on its own a couple of times, think it was a bad spool. Went to using BullBuster braid or 832 and haven't run into any problems with them yet.

I checked out all the eyes but they were all good. The line was only breaking about 50 feet from the rod end every time

I have used: McCoy- very good Power Pro- ok . The old is horrible. Spyder Wire- ok Berkley Fireline- Hate it, if I had a heavier test it might have been better. Sufix 832- EXCELLENT! I sure wish they made it in more than 80lb. 50-65 lb work better for me. I like the diameter of it.

I had that problem on 20lb, but it was my own fault, Some times I tend to whip my rods a little to hard and ater a few casts they would snap from the strain. Another it was the guides.

What about Jerry Brown? Do ya'll consider that better then Sufix? Jerry Brown is excellent, one of the best. Suffix is good also. I lean toward JB white except for jigging reels, which I use Daiwa Boat braid metered line or Suffix metered line. You can tell from the answers that most on this board are inshore fishermen. Try asking on the offshore board.

Just be mindful that the roughness of braid can damage rod guides especially if you are fighing huge fish. I have yet to see a billfisherman or tuna fisherman (real big tuna) use braid in his reel. It should not be a problem with smaller fish.

All my offshore conventional reels Avets & Senators have mono 2 with a JB HC #130 backing. We all used to use Dacron #130 but no more.

It should not be a problem with smaller fish. I respectfully disagree totally with this. If your braid is rough it is very cheap braid or very old. I haven't heard of any guides damaged by braid in many years, including chrome guides. Any guide from Aluminum Oxide to SIC is braid ready. Most billfisherman use mono because they troll and braid isn't optimal for trolling because it doesn't have any stretch. The people on the west coast catching 300+ pound tuna use braid almost exclusively.
