Gas hog are you kidding. In my research it's the only truck that gets 18-20 mpg empty and more than 15 mpg pulling anything. Not to mention it will last a lot longer than a gasser (except maybe the old toyota 4x4's) and still have enough power to get the job done when it's 15 years old. I'm sick and tired of buying gasoline trucks that wear me out pulling a single axle 4-wheeler trailer and then wear me out again at the gas pump. Then again it's just my opinion.

So i got a discount plus a truck that can tow 7 toyotas, Your telling me you paid sticker for a toyota?, how many dodges can your toyota tow? Point is they dont make a toyota that can do what i need. I wasnt knocking toyotas just stating my opinion. Does yours have one of those tall orange flags on the bumper?

If you guys want fuel mileage look at the dodge sprinter van. They are converting them to winabgos. At 24 foot with a slider unit they are getting 19-23 mpg loaded. Those things run a 5 cylinder mercedes diesel>
The worst times fishing are still better than the best time thinking about it.

NOT EVERYBODY NEEDS A VEHICLE THAT CAN "TOW" SEVEN TOYOTAS...I BOUUGHT WHAT I NEEDED..I THINK A LOT OF PEOPLK OVER BUY...AND NO i DONT PAY STICKER PRICE.. AND NO I DID NOT HAVE ANY REASON TO TO BUY A TRUCK THAT COULD TOW 10K WHEN 2500-3000 IS ALL I EVER PULL. ..HUGE DISCOUNTS ON VEHICLES DO AFFECT RESALE IF YOU ARE BUYING EVERY 4- 5 YEARS.... LIKE I DO...ORANGE FLAG????..

Back to the original topic, sounds like a lemon. I don't have a favorite diesel because I'm a Chevy guy and am not going to defend the Chevy diesels, but I've worked on diesels and have not seen a difference in owner loyalty or anything else to say one is better than the other. Try taking off your mods or if you trade it in, leave the other one stock.
Diesel guys/gals: Why do you leave that thing running all the time? It really doesn't run your battery(ies) down to start it, it's just darn annoying. All too often I see a guy pull up to a convinience store, pull up to the front spot taking two spaces, leave the engine running, and squeeze past the cattle gaurd into the front door. Also, if you are taking it in for service and the engine needs to be turned off, WHY LEAVE IT RUNNING? You pull up into a crowded bay where people are trying to work and niose the place out with your 90-decibel engine, then get out and stand there waiting for someone to come to you. I used to let you people stand there until you turned it off or left.
I drive a 1991 GMC Safari van that has over 246,000 miles on it and tow a small boat. Gas mileage sucks. Sometimes I get stuck. But it is by far the best vehicle I've ever owned, and it runs on gas.

I had a 04 reg cab 6 cyl and had horible gas mileage and the transmission broke in 05. I just traded it in for a tacoma 2.7 4 cyl 4WD prerunner. It pulls way better than that dodge ever did and gets 18-20 gas mileage. Supper good quality too. I have a 18 foot bluewave center console boat.

I owned an 86 one ton Toyota with the 4 cyl 22re injected engine with a 5 speed. I loved that truck. It got 25-27hwy and 18 pulling the boat. I would have gotten another but the only truck that was available when I needed another was not up to par with that one. The v6's mileage were worse than my Dodge that I bought and cost almost as much. The 2.7's wouldn't do better than the diesel pulling mileage either and when I was looking you could only get it in that 4 wheel drive look alike with the bigger tires. I don't have a problem with my purchase even now, I am sorry some people do. I sold mine at 240k and 13+ years.
I find people that leave their motors running all the time. Why pick on diesel owners? I see people leaving kids in their cars more than I see people leaving their cars running and thats what I think is the worst but no I don't leave mine running unless maybe fixing to launch. I see gassers doing that too.
The 2.7 sprinter van has a nice engine. I wish I could find a wrecked one and had the knowledge to build up a pulling truck based on it. It would be great. However considering that soon there will be more smaller trucks with diesels and diesel has 25-30 percent more energy per gallon I will have to just wait. Did anyone read that Cummins has just agreed to build a diesel for light duty trucks and other smaller vehicles? They are keeping the customer secret for the moment but soon we will have more options for diesel and that means the most fuel efficient trucks will all be diesels. Can't wait.

Allison1, I'm picking on diesel owners because the vehicles are loud and annoying. Standard rule of thumb is, if you have to raise your voice to speak to someone within two feet of you the noise is 85 decibels or higher and prolonged exposure will cause hearing loss. Not to say that it hurts your ears, because the exposure is not prolonged. And in an open space the noise is not as bad, but give the noise something to bounce off of close by and it magnifies it.
You have a point about others doing it as well but like I said I can walk right past a car and not know it is running, but a Cummins or a Powerstroke (Duramaxx isn't as loud) just hacks me off. If you are using your vehicle i.e. boat launch I don't care what you do, in fact I think leaving the engine running is a good idea (keep in mind this is also an open space).
Also, I'm glad to hear somebody saying something about a clean-burning diesel, because I'm also sick of lung-fulls of black sut and hydrocarbons bellowing from the tailpipe(s) of the truck in front of me. I know there are a lot more cars out there that spew nasty **** into the air, so don't think I'm trying to pick on anyone, or make sweeping generalizations about diesel owners. Just it's usually more noticable on a big loud truck that could kill me in any other vehicle and only have to replace a bumber.
I love that these products are available and I know they are a necessity to many people, it's just that I've met a lot of diesel owners and many of them seem to think that since they have a powerful, heavy truck that the rules of the road and of common courtesy do not apply to them. They have a different attitude, if you will, which I find abrasive. And when I say "they" I am reffering to those that I speak of, not all diesel owners.
I mean no offense by any words said here, and apologize in advance if I offend anyone. Just keep in mind that you, as a diesel owner, must take into account that there are a lot of people on the road and in society and you drive a very different vehicle than they are used to. I know, people in little cars cut you off, don't keep in mind you can't stop as fast, etc. the list goes on. It's a two-way road and please keep in mind I am aware of both points of view.
I would rather listen to a diesel than a honda with a coffee can at the end of the exaust and the latest hip-hop banging the license plate against the trunk. But that's another thread...

Diesel is not the most environmentally friendly fuel. Battery will never take over in my opinion and hydrogen is still waiting for a breakthrough in production costs which I do think has a real possibility of happening in the near (5 year) future.
It is a stopgap fuel and is now becoming cleaner burning near on par with gas with the added energy it contains. My truck is indeed noisy and I try and take that into consideration on the road and stoplights, parking lots, etc...
If anyone is interested diesel is not only for big trucks anymore. In fact a first year race car won the Sebring 12 hour race this year after starting at the end of the pack. Audi is going to also race it at the 24 hours of Le Mans and are a favorite to win. Its more fuel efficient and get this....it is by far the quietest car on the track.
But back to the original intent of this thread. I have read and seen pictures of 4 Dodge trucks that pulled daily and made more than 1 million miles. No ford no chevy but Dodge, all on the same engine. Ford has done more buy backs of their diesels in any of the last 3 years than Dodge has done in its entire diesel building history, probably by a ratio of 3 to 1 or more.

Yeah, it's easy to give up on a brand because of a bad experience. Luckily my dad didn't. He bought a brand-new Chevy Camaro in '84 that had a rear-end issue. He took it to the dealer to have it fixed and when he picked it up, saw the original locktite on the bolts of the rear-end. He asked the guy if they had fixed it and he said yes, and my dad made a bet with him: they would both go for a ride and if the whining and grinding was still there they had to take the car back for a full refund. He won the bet.
But he didn't give up on Chevy, and continued to own and maintain them until even today, and his brand loyalty rubbed off on me. Now he swears up and down he will never buy a new car. I love those hunks of metal. But get this: if I have to buy a diesel, sorry Chevy, I'm going with one of the big boys.
