I am wondering which size worm might be best, on average, in the summer (warm water) on a Carolina Rig. Some say when the bite slows down in summer to use finesse, 4-inch worms. Others say it's best to match the hatch and use large worms, like a 10-inch worm, since bait fish are larger in the summer. I can experiment, but when fishing is slow and you only catch a few fish, or none, it's not easy to judge whether you are doing something wrong. Any replies will be appreciated.

My theory is go big or go home ... unless they just really aren't biting "big" - then i will switch to a trick-worm on a shaky head. So go big or go shaky i guess.

I love the ten inch worm in the summer.

Thanks for the reply Ted. I need to order some Power Worms and am asking for opinions regarding size and color before I place an order. I used to use a black 10-inch power worm on a Texas rig and caught fish with them, but the last few times I've used them I haven't caught anything. Am thinking I will try a different color and, based on comments on my other post, I think I will give June bug a good workout. My water is murky and someone recommended it for murky water. Plum and blue fleck seem to also be popular colors. But size is the issue I'm asking about on this post.

On the same day, same hour at Fork, caught them on 4" and a 11" worms two weeks ago. Different colors, watermelon short worms....black/blue 11" worms.... it was hot and no wind...lake was slick...if someone figures this out....pm me.

I read this in Bill Murphy's book, he said basically this, upsize when they start biting. Let's say your throwing a 10" worm and not getting bit, then switch to a 7" and see if that does anything, on the flip side if they are biting a 10" worm, you can go to a 12" or bigger and see if you can get some bigger fish to bite.
Believe me, he goes into much greater detail than that, I think there are over 20 pages just talking about worm sizes and colors, but that is how I view his believe on worm size and it has been working for me to some degree.

I keep a few colors of 10" (plum, motor oil, blue fleck, grn pump) but 7" only blue fleck for some reason. There have been a few times on fork where i couldn't get them to bite a 10 but started catching them when i switched to a 7.

When the fish get lethargic in the summer heat, they don't want to move for a small meal.

Thanks very much guys. This gives me some good things to try. I have 7", called and located some 10" in a local store and will get some tomorrow. Be ready for fishing next week.
