Point-1
I recently installed one of Lowrance's "Point-1" GPS antenna's on my boat. I had heard that it was a lot faster updating but I was blown away at HOW fast. With the old built in antenna the boat would get ahead of the antenna a bit so you had to kind of anticipate where it was going. Not anymore, the GPS stayed right with the boat at any speed. Real smooth too. I highly reccomend one if you use any of Lowrance's HDS units. Don't bother if you are using any of the Elite series, the processor in the Elite-7 can't keep up with the antenna.

Got mine from David when they first came out and it is a game changer! Couldn't agree more Ernest. Saves so much time trying to find your brushpiles.

After fishing in Ernest's boat Saturday and seeing the difference in this antenna....I'm sold. I'm putting one on my boat. Although they are not cheap, I feel they are very much worth it in the performance of the graph.

I too got a Point 1 for my HDS 8, I need to recalibrate it, the curser is pointer slightly to the side while traveling - LOL. I haven't found enough spots here yet to check how good it is now to be able to get back on locations yet. But I'll keep after it thumb

If you have Gen 1 HDS, note this unit does not have the compass built in the unit as Gen 2. All you gain with Point 1 (Gen 1) is faster refresh rate, not the compass arrow that allows you to locate and pinpoint waypoints on the first pass so much easier. This explanation was given to me by Lowrance a while back when I was researching Point 1.

Try running your unit on north up and let your heading line do the work. If your boat is pointing to the northwest so will you heading line on your screen. Go south and it is pointing at the bottom of your screen. You will know instantly what direction your boat is pointing without moving at all. It even picks up sats inside my barn with only one door open. Move the bow of my boat by pushing trailer in my barn and the heading moves to match your the direction the boat is pointing... Point 1 and HDS units are Worth every penny.

Have HDS's on bow and console and its one of the best investments to date.

I was told the same thing by Lowrance. I also observed the difference in the Gen-1 & Touch Screens. I, having a Gen-1 set- up was not willing to invest the $$$ for the Point-1 at that time. After a short time, I learned to work with the slower refresh speed, and never had a problem with missing way points or brush pile. But fished with guys that struggled ( rolleyes OkieBob rolleyes ) with the slower curser speed. But with his new Touch Screens, he is Johnny On The Spot these days.

My HDS-7 has gone out, and will replace with a Touch Screen or a Gen-2 according to the deal I can make, and will be looking to include the Point-1 if I move up. They are nice on the newer stuff, but wasn't worth the money to add to my Gen-1 set up. Just the opinion of a old man.

Point-1? First I've heard about this. I have the HDS8-Gen2, so I'm guessing this addition would be a good thing? I'm looking for it (just window shopping) but nothing yet.

The Point 1 GPS antenna updates 10 time a second and has a built in compass that tells the direction your boat is pointing. When you hook it up it will respond to the slightest direction change of boat super fast and never stops showing the direction of boat even when setting dead still. Little pricey but worth it once you see one run. You will need point 1 $199 and nmea 2000 starter kit at $69...

Benny is right on! The NMEA 2000 is simple to install as is the Point 1. Give David a call and he can fix you right up with both. And, I would add that with the NMEA 2000 connecting your units together, you have a network that shares waypoints as well and if you want, share the Point 1 too!
