The Point 1 GPS antenna updates 10 time a second ... Benny, I was talking to a guy at BPS in the electronics department and he said it updates 25 times a second.....but again...he works at Bass Pro No matter though if it 10 or 25; it's very nice having the smooth movement of the cursor. And you're right about the compass pointing, but that is something that I will have to get use to, as it's generally pointing the opposite direction that I'm going

HO HO HO..... Two weeks ago I told Guy about the Point-1 (as did Bennie) and he said NO WAY am I spending almost $300. on a new antenna. I can find the waypoints just fine now. Sat morning after 10 min. in my boat he said "How much was that again"?. 10 more min. he said OK will you install one for me? Of course I said NO. 10 more min and he asked OK how much will you charge to install one. We're still negotiating on that.

If I have the HDS unit with the built-in antenna, can you still add this one?

If I have the HDS unit with the built-in antenna, can you still add this one? If you have HDS Gen2 you can add it and reap the full benefits. It will require a NMEA starter kit if you do not already have a network established....

David I know Lowrance doesn't tell you but, if you recall, I put a Point 1 on my old gen 1 HDS 8 and it worked just great!

If I add it to my Gen 1 HDS 8, do I still need the NMEA starter kit?

Are you getting the full benefits of the point 1 on the Gen 1 as you are with Gen2 ? such as the compass

I don't know about gen 1 units but I do know that the Elite 7 units are not going to work with "point 1" antenna. It make them freeze up but when you hook HDS gen 2 to another HDS gen 2 it is SUPER FAST at responding to boat movement. Can't express how good it works..... I think that the upgrade to "point 1" is by far the best thing I have done in years. It's bad azz....

Many thanks for a lot of great info everyone! I just ordered my Point 1 & the network starter kit. I'm hoping they'll be here before the GTG, even if I'm up late the night of the 11th for the install. On the antenna, does the cable shoot straight down thru a hole in the deck & run up to the network module? Then just connect the network module to the HDS? Is the network module powered? Can't wait to get them!

The "point 1" runs to a backbone that is a series of T's from nmea starter kit. 1 nmea wire from front unit and another short nmea wire to back unit if its close enough to reach unit on console. In all you need 4 T's if you hook up two units.
Two T's come with the nmea starter kit and one T comes with "point 1 antenna". You will need one more T to make it work with two units. You will have a T for each unit and one T for antenna and one more T to run a power to backbone (switched) to be able to turn off when not in use or battery will run down.
The antenna does have to have a hole in deck for wire to run to backbone and should not be mounted by trolling motor or big motor because of the compass. Mount it by console to keep it from interference from motors.
Takes about one hour to hook it all up and then go into menu to turn on point 1 antenna to each unit in gps settings. Once thats done you need to configure antenna when you get on the lake by making a large circle.
Hope that's clear enough...It's really simple and easy.
