I always peg but in open areas I just move my peg up the line a bit. Then if I get to some place that has more cover I slide it back down.

Nice article! Thanks... I only peg in heavy stuff, so that's good to know. I seemed to feel the 'tick tick' better without weight. I like this quote: "If you feel the fish, you can bet he feels you so you better do something quickly!

Yes I agree with the old school, no peg unless in heavy stuff.

I peg whenever I fish medium to heavy cover. I personally feel I have better control and feel when I peg If Im not getting bit then I will un-peg to see if presentation makes a difference. I have only had a couple of times where the fish wanted it un-pegged.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an un-scarred and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways holding a 10# LMB in one hand and your favorite rod and reel in the other, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!

I have rarely pegged a weight. When I first tried it back in the 80's it seemed like a good thing for fishing reeds and grass.
Now I only do it with a heavy weight used to punch grass. Pretty rare occurrence.

I work a pegged worm in lillypads and in the tops of trees that are located in deeper water. The peg prevents the weight from going over one side of a branch or pad and keeps the worm working down the cover. Jigheads get through some of it, but not all and if you use tungsten, it lets you feel the structure better. I also have regular t-rig ready for base of trees and lay downs but they usually hit both the same for me. placed second and third in tourneys using nothing but pegged this year, so it ain't a problem for me...

i use either the rubber tungsten weight stops with mono/floro or the thread bobber stops with braid,,,but most of the time i let it slide, if I'm going to fish nothing but cover I want my weight to stay with the bait so I peg, but if it's mostly open water with some cover i let it slide...but most importantly i use the "hassle factor", meaning if i'm having issue with a free weight I peg it...just my two cents

eagle claw bobber stops...helps you vary rate of fall when coming out of any cover. punch hubs not just for vegetation...i use bobber stop above and below my punch rig...allows me to split shot rig, carolina rig, texas rig or peg it tight for pitchin and flipn...lots of flexibility using bobber stops...

I always do... Of course you do right?
Buddy of mine says a well known pro, old guy, like Denny Brauers age is a huge proponent of not pegging the weight...
My buddy can't recall the pros name; spent all day on the boat me throwing out ever old pros name I can think off and no match
Anyone know who this was/is? The real answer is that it depends on what kind of structure you are fishing as to whether or not you peg. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't.

I never peg it... If I want a jig I pitch a jig. If I want a Carolina rig or splitshot rig I pitch that. Pegging it ruins the glide after the weight lands. That "crawfish glide" you hear about that knocks them out. I don't know why you would peg it in most situations other than just learning poor habits from someone along the way *Shrug* but I'm no pro, I just know when and how I get bit and stick with whatever works for the bass.
