Somebody should find this kid and take him on a guided hunting/fishing trip. And then send pics and all the meat to her... I feel sorry for him, and her kind of. I bet she strongly opposes gun ownership as well...

She's got a real awakening when this person reaches the age of 18.

Friggin UK...
I'm all for a parent's right to tell their kid what they can and can't do. It sucked when I was a kid, but hey, parents should be allowed to raise their kids (even if they are F'in idiots about it and I don't agree with their choices). My problem is:

#1 This lady is his grandmother, not his mother.
#2 His dad fished, obviously that wasn't a deal breaker for his mother.
#3 Why does she have a problem with the store owner? If she wants to control what her grandchild spends money on, then a) don't give him money to spend or b) 'forbid' him from spending it on fishing stuff.
The shop owner is no more responsible for this than a vending machine is responsible for the kid being fat.

Very short sighted. In my case, As a young boy one of the first things I ever constructed on my own, without any adult help was a fishing pole with kite string for line and a safety pin for a hook. I remember catching a grasshopper and using it for bait and within just a few seconds of tossing it in the creek behind my house seeing a small LMB eagerly grab hold of it.Of course the bass seemed massive at that time. I don't recall the outcome, but the excitement was all it took to make me determined to be a fisherman. I then saved up my meager allowance (earned from doing chores) of 1 dollar a week until I had enough to send off for the brand new Zebco spincast rod and reel combo that was advertised in a magazine I had. This was the first thing I ever saved up to buy and probably the first thing I ever purchased period except maybe a soda-pop down at the Cabell's store. I also had to learn about patience because the Zebco corp. took about 6 weeks to get the thing to me. But boy was I tickled. It came with a bonus gold plated spoon and a practice plug which I used back in our back yard, throwing into a hoola-hoop until I learned how to cast. I'd say I got quite a bit out of becoming a fisherman. I feel so sorry for this boy, if this is a real letter, being punished for this is senseless.

Ufortunately, it would not surprise me in the least if the letter were found to be factual. During the 33 years I have practiced my proffession, I have had countless encountrs with parents such as her. I have seen the damage done to children by warped idiots posing as parents..
This type parental behavior can be found associated with many activities we were fortunate to have experienced growing up as children. I truly feel sorry for that young man and that he must live in such an oppressive and ignorant home. My prayers are with him.

I grew up on a lake and I never thought that a person was suppose to do anything other than fish and hunt as part of growing up, My father and Grandfather both fished/hunted and my son also grew up fishing/hunting. One question I would ask the woman is what the He.. do you eat? Are you a strict vegetarian? Have you ever eaten any meat? and how do you think it was killed? I have a friends wife that will eat any store bought meat or eggs but will not eat wild game or fresh eggs? Only the outdoors man and those that fish and hunt will survive if this world ever crashes.
