Hey Lehman, hate to hear about the heat stroke. Heat strokes happen when folks get more concerned with finishing a project than paying attention to what their body is telling them. It is time to realize your not 18 anymore. Since I am outside a lot (when I work, fish, hunt), I always take water and tomato juice (don't like the sugar drinks) for rehydration. I will drink them in an emergency though.

While working pay attention to a couple of things....the first is dizziness when you bend down, and the second thing how often have you urinated today. If you get dizzy then can't recall the last time you urinated, go drink a large bottle of water. If you still feel thirsty then follow it up with tomato juice (or something similar.)...If you still feel thirsty or can't urinate within a few minutes, go inside and/or take a long break (15 to 30 min) or a shower...as you just averted a heat stroke in an early warning stage.

When bending, if you get a dizzy (I'm gonna fall over before I can drop to one knee) sensation then you need to drop to one knee, level your head, then check to see if you are sweating. If your NOT sweating, get inside immediately then try to assess your overall state of heat exhaustion...a cold shower or a cold towel to the head/neck area will help to cool you down if you can catch it early enough. Rehydration is critical at this point.

If you ARE sweating, take a water break under a shade tree (or other cool area)...sit down as you are taking a break, then check your vitals (ie., do I feel normal or weird right now.) If you are not sure how you feel, call someone who WILL answer and talk to them, tell them where you are, what you are doing, then ask them what about the temperature and humidity level. Tell them you are working outside, taking a short break because you aren't sure but you think you MAY BE getting overheated. At that point, anyone who truly knows you (especially your wife, family member) will go into critical thinking mode and assess you (i.e., is he slurring his speech, or talking different than normal.) If they give you advice, take it...

If they don't think anything is out of whack, then ask them to call you back in a few minutes...then get up and go to get another drink of water...if you can't get up and get that drink of water, at least you will be getting that life saving call...If you can answer the call, just tell them you went to get up to get a drink of water and couldn't make it and need help. If you DON'T answer, they already have all the information necessary to get medical attention to you. If you can get up and get that drink of water without any dizziness or sick at your stomach feeling...get back to work, OTHERWISE call it a day...Rehydrate then take a cool shower and a nap...live to work another day.

Wow, glad you are ok Leyman!
Getting older I have muscle cramps on occasion. I drink Gatorade and it seems to prevent them for me.

Leyman,
A lot of valuable information has been giving, but........
When your body is sweating, but it's humid and your shirt is not drying, your body is not cooling, change to a dry shirt. When I was working, getting off & on hot roofs all day, I would always have extra shirts to put on. On some humid days, I'd have 4-5 wet stinky tee-shirts in a laundry bag in my truck tool box. I had another adjuster tell me this trick and it seemed to help me a bunch.
Glad your OK, but watch out, it's about to get really hot here in the Lone Star State flame

Some beach,man...I hope all is well. Enjoy your post. But more importantly your health. "Stay Healthy My Friends" . Well I had a couple close calls. EKG might show some but just do what you can and don't overexert yourself. Your body will try to let you know what's up. Just got to be smart enough to listen.

Glad to hear you are doing better now Leyman. With the summer temps and humidity coming on we must all be a lot more careful.

I had the same thing happen to me 2 years ago, glad you are recovering.

When I started taking blood pressure medicine no one told me it was stripping the salt out of my blood to reduce my blood pressure.

Ended up the the emergency room & got 2&1/2 liters of saline solution. Doctor said I couldn't have drank enough liquids to replenish my system in the next 3 weeks on my own.

Something for everyone to remember for the future. If you start taking blood pressure medicine you can & will have a reduced tolerance to working in the Heat!
