I will not name the big bass tournament that I was fishing when I did weigh a fish that was 16" long. It touched the line but did not go over. Game warden was standing there and said (GOOD JOB) It was worth 600.00 dollars. And yes I checked and re-checked before I took it to the weigh-in and then went up before and asked for a clarification of the rule before I took it out of my boat. As long as it does not go over was what they told me. I rolled the dice and got lucky.

That is why each trail declares the brand of measuring board they use in their rules. That way everyone has a chance to use the same standard.
It's best to know what board they use and whether they plan to just pinch the tail or pinch and sweep. I've thrown fish back out here that touch 16" when I sweep the tail only to get to weigh in and have them just pinch.

Like I said earlier a trail can impose more strict size limits. By using the same logic as this thread title technically a 12' spot is a legal fish on some lakes but you can't weigh them in as such. I don't get you on this point. the rules are the rules tournament or state. some have to be under, some can be over, some have to be over whatever the mark.

r43 those scissors will get someone a much bigger fine and possibly a felony to boot
a word to the wise if you catch a fish where the tail has been trimmed throw it back. The story about it was that way when I caught it means nothing to the GW.

Legal or not....It's not going to make enough weight just touching the line to win...so why bother. If its 15 and 7'8th's I'd think that last 1'8 of an inch wouldn't matter and could save someone from a fine or DQ. just my 2 cents 16" could make a nice difference because you might not be catching and culling 5+ 15 7/8" fish. usually you are just lucky to get a limit of 15" fish, so getting one right on the line could be literally "money". do people throw back overs that touch 24"? I've also heard rumors some of the most consistent tournament fisherman on Fork push that 16" line and known to WD every few years after measuring. I don't know about most tournaments, but I know with FLW you need to be 1/8" or so off to not make it, they are VERY lenient. My advice is to have the exact board the tournament uses and make sure it is in good condition, check fish carefully, and then use courtesy board too if more questions. Fish can change during the day too a little. No offense here...but a 15 7/8th inch fish weight versus 16 inches even is nothing...not talking fat or skinny here...just length....I'd be willing to bet it's not an ounce. So my point is why chance it. But hey...people will do what they want....push rules to the limit...break em if possible...and it is what it is...Me? I'll just keep it close....not paying a fine for such a small length and possibly be DQ'ed to boot.

GW pinched and swept the tail on one i brought in during legends.. then flipped the fish and pinched and swept tail again

Exactly my point! Everybody does it differently, which is frustrating as sh$&! What about a fish with no top lip? Do you force the mouth all the way closed or close the jaw to it's "natural" closed position as if it had a top lip? That can make the difference in 1/4 to 1/2 an inch...
