I have the Friday before reserved for a day off of work already so I can head down there and get a day of fishing in with all the early campers. Not sure if I am camping yet or chrashing at Todds house, need to get with him to see what is going on. Will be a welcome break to sleep on the ground/couch and not have a crying new born waking me up every few hrs smile.

Thought you'd never ask laugh

We have decided that B_Rod & his most awesome wife will be cooking the
night before: Carna Asada, Rice & Beans for about 80-100.

Here is a list of the things that I know will be needed...

Styrofoam Plates
4 rolls of Napkins
3 boxes of Forks
Tortillas & or Bread
Bottled Water
Soft Drinks: Sprite, Coke, DP, etc.
Bags of Ice 8-10
8 Large trash bags
4 Additional Folding Tables
2 Additional Canopies
3 Additional Coolers (Large) for GTG Drinks

Please feel free to volunteer to bring something from the list.
Everything but the Ice, Tortillas/Bread can be reused if not used at this GTG time around. I think it's better to have more than we need than to have too little. For example: We need 100 forks for the GTG but if we have 200 the remaining forks can be taken home.

I will bring:
1 Case "Coke"
1 Roll of Napkins
8 Large Trash Bags
1 Folding Table
Posted By: JavelinJ

Re: - Official North Texas GTG Thread - - 08/22/12 01:06 PM

I can bring a folding table and case of waters.

Re: - Official North Texas GTG Thread - - 08/22/12 01:07 PM

I can also bring a 5 gallon Igloo if someone was planning on mixing up tea???

Posted By: SleepingTiger

Re: - Official North Texas GTG Thread - - 08/22/12 01:22 PM

I'll bring 2 rolls of napkins, forks and a large 5 gallon cooler for drinks.

Posted By: bert

Re: - Official North Texas GTG Thread - - 08/22/12 02:26 PM

I will bring a large cooler with 2 bags of ice, 2 small and one large folding table, and I will swing by Sam's and get a huge box of forks to cover them all. I will also hit up the Tortilla Factory in Plano and get 6 dozen corn and 6 dozen flour tortillas and bring a camp grill and griddle to heat them up on.

I also have 4-6 rolls of paper towels left over from the last GTG I can donate for napkins.

I forgot to mention, if you have not had B-Rods better half's carne asada you better come get ya some! That is good eats right there.

Posted By: txkayaker

Re: - Official North Texas GTG Thread - - 08/22/12 03:14 PM

I got started on a couple after work, I will have to hammer out a few to pick out the worthy one for the GTG.

Hammering some steal by Texas big redneck, on Flickr

These still have a ways to go, but I got something started. These spikes look ok, but the may not be worthy for the GTG. I will keep working on them while I hammer out a few more in a day or two. A couple spikes and a couple letter openers.

Awesome work BRN!!!

Posted By: B_Rod

Re: - Official North Texas GTG Thread - - 08/23/12 05:49 PM

Allow me to clarify...the meat and chicken will be marinaded Friday night, and I will grill it Sat morning. I am brining a gas grill and I believe Todd is bringing a large charcoal grill. If someone wants to bring a third grill, even better. With three grills running, we can probably grill the meat in an hour. The rice and beans will be made late the previous evening and warmed up Sat morning. We will have homemade salsa too (we don't mess around) as well as tortillas, probably a mix of flour and corn tortillas.

Not to brag, but my wife's carne (and chicken) asada recipe is pretty dang good. Looking forward to sharing it with my brother (and sister) kayakers.

Re: - Official North Texas GTG Thread - - 08/24/12 01:42 AM

Well freak frack! I did a oops at work and now I'm at the ER waiting forever. I cut my hand and got the tendons in my pinky and ring fingers on my right hand. I hope to be swinging the hammer way before the GTG. I might try to slime the yak this weekend a little if I can sneak past the wife LOL!

Come on out to the GTG. It will be a blast! Look for the open invites before the weekends and join one. They are open to anybody and the more the better. I also don't know anybody in this section of the forum that would not bend over backwards to teach you how to catch fish.

RISE Adventures info, post up in THAT thread if you plan to attend. 1/2 entry fee will be limited to the first 15 volunteers that show up at the RISE event.

B-Rod, got ya covered like we had discussed on the food.

I understand some folks have asked about making donations but are unable to attend the event. Yes, you can directly donate at www.heroesonthewater.org BUT if you are donating because you're hearing of this event WE WANT YOUR DONATIONS COUNTED TOWARDS THIS EVENT. Discretion is no issue & you're money does not have to pass through any hands that you're not comfortable with. Feel free to contact me via PM or via phone 817.410.1564 direct so that it can at least be added to the total collected on behalf of the North Texas Kayakers. Last year this event raised over $800, a respectable total, but let's blow it away this year.

Thanks!

Jason Foshea/ D/FW HOW assistant/ gopher/ marketing guy person.

Re: - Official North Texas GTG Thread - - 09/11/12 06:08 AM

I really got back at it this evening, I even sent a text out to a friend letting him know that I was half skeerd it might hurt LOL! He said go for it! Several hours later the hand is being iced down, but with satisfaction. My hammer strikes stink, I moved down to a three pound hammer and it was a PETA griping with out the pinky and unstable. It will get better with practice and time. My oldest is showing interest again so he may be pounding some out soon.
After I work on these a little, I may have to let you guys vote on which blade is worthy of our GTG, so give me a few days to get a little more before the final finish.

And for safety's sake - watch out for the bike riders - they're thick as a school of shad on the park roads ! smile

Re: - Official North Texas GTG Thread - - 09/22/12 12:21 PM

Yeah, catfishing can be really good there particularly if the wind is blowing out of the south across the lake. There are some nice drop offs close enough to the shore to get out to. I've caught some cats upwards of 20-30 lbs over there. I plan on bringing my bank rods Friday night if the wind is right.

I use this site to check for burn bans. According to them, Denton county has a burn ban, but Tarrant county currently does not. Seems the camp site is close to the border between the counties? Not sure which county it is in.

I would just plan on not being able to have wood or charcoal fires. Propane stoves and cookers are allowed during a burn ban.
Posted By: paddling oar's

Re: - Official North Texas GTG Thread - - 09/24/12 01:53 AM

I was told by a park ranger during a fire ban that charcoal grills are ok as long as they are off the ground. So you just can't use the ones that you put the charcoal on the ground.

I will be there Friday and will show you a couple of ways to throw the net, one of them from the seated position so you can throw it from the yak. We are going to try and do a video of it at the GTG on Saturday and post it so people can use it to learn with.

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) will waive day-use fees at its more than 2,400 USACE-operated recreation areas nationwide in recognition of National Public Lands Day, Sept. 29. This includes the 38 lakes located within the Tulsa District USACE. On this day, fees normally charged at boat launch ramps and swimming beaches will be waived. USACE does not charge entrance fees to its parks.

The waiver does not apply to camping and camping-related services, or fees for specialized facilities such as group picnic shelters. Other agencies and partners that manage recreation areas located on USACE lands are encouraged but not required to comply with this waiver of day-use fees in the areas they manage.

Per the COE FaceBook page!

My wife is not welcome at all. She better keep her arse back home with the kids and not even think about calling me when I'm fishing or POW to the moon alice!

I'm glad my wife doesn't read these boards or my kitchen pass wouldnt be worth the paper it is not printed on.

I'm bidding my time. Oct 15th will be here soon enough and then so will I.

Actually I think Sunday I'm gonna go try to stick a couple of footballs for the smoker. The COE at GV will be pretty dead. Youth hunt doesn't start till the first but adults can't hunt till the 15th. Only ones who about to be out there if any one is maybe somebody else looking for hogs or maybe tree rats.
Posted By: FishingRythe

Re: - Official North Texas GTG Thread - - 09/27/12 07:56 PM

I got Thursday and Friday off to head down to GV early and get some fishing in. Got to love a place that gives me time off during the weekday to go fishing, not a bad deal at all. I'll probably make it down to the camp grounds around 3pm or so to hang out and get the boat wet. Been about a month since I went fishing last due to the little one and need to get some time on the water badly.

After much deliberation Team REN is now a maybe to attend the GTG. Team REN will not let the over population of fishing teams & professional sponsored anglers deter Team REN from the GTG. After much research, it has been confirmed there will be some of us "regular" guys also attending. These are the guys I feel I'll have more in common with. Team REN ask to NOT be included in raffle drawings of any kind....That is all. End line.

Re: - Official North Texas GTG Thread - - 09/29/12 03:14 PM

I am sitting in my shop with my yak behind my truck setting up to carve a cows head as a pattern for a roto-molded roping dummy. Decent paying job came in last night on the condition it will be finished by Monday AM.

I am probably going to start the carving machine running, stash my yak in the shop and head over to the GTG with the machine running un-attended. Hopefully I'll come back to finished cow head and not another naked woman like last time.

Been planning on this one for a long time, but work is pretty precious right now and this will add to my yak upgrade stash.

See Ya Soon, ( I hope ) Phill
