This is what has worked for me in the past:

Go to the saltwater tackle section of academy and get one of the ready made popping corks with a steel leader. Typically the leader is a little under 2 feet long and includes quick connectors and swivels. It is cheap and ready to fish.

Next you need to attach a fairly large treble hook to the end of the leader.

On that hook you will hook a LIVE bluegill underneath the dorsal fin. Be sure not to hit the spine or the baity won't flop around very good.

You will see the float bobbing around from the bluegill, but you will know you have a gar when the cork takes off. At this point you need to wait. When the fish has stopped, tighten up the line and set the hook hard. Then hold on.

Since you are buying a ready made float and leader, I don't think a picture is really necessary. Hope that helps.

I use something like gar1970's when I fish for fun. I also like quick strike tandem trebles. Perch under a cork will work, but you will get more longnose than anything and most you wont hook. Use fresh cut drum, carp, or buffalo for alligator gar. I would go ahead and build my own rigs over ready made stuff, the wire really is not heavy enough in the pre-packed stuff.

*If it has sat in ice all day and washed out it is not fresh. Best is catch and cut on site, next is catch and put on top of ice, third is frozen but still taken care of like people food.

GREAT ADVICE- Love the tandem quick strike idea. That's pretty darn smart.

I believe what I was told to was wait till they finish that initial run with the bait to stop. Then when the float stops wait about 30 seconds once it for them to work it farther into the back of their mouth. Then WHACK EM!

Ya well the quick strike rigs only work about 1/2 of the time unless you have some people in the boat that SET THE HOOK when you tell them too and then about 2/3 of the time
