Just exchanged the Curado 200 G7 for a G5. Just a lower gear ratio. Curado reels are absolutely horrible in my opinion. With an H20 Express I can chunk weightless lures, with a Curado they go absolutely nowhere and the Curado cost 130$ compared to 40$ for the H20 Express. Hoping the lower gear ratio will allow for a faster turning of the spool and a better ability to throw lightweight lures. I know the retrieve is said to be faster but unsure about the casting.

just tried out the new G5. Threw a beetle spin with a small split shot and it threw it flawlessly. the lower gear ratio definitely helped with throwing light tackle.

Lower gear ratio only affects your retrieve, adjusting your brakes and cast control knob will allow you to throw lighter lures.

the lower gear ratio definitely helped with throwing light tackle. I'm not sure if this is some kind of joke or what? Do you really think the gear ratio has ANYTHING to do with the casting ability of a reel? When you press the thumb bar to cast, you are disengaging the gears, that's why they call it "free spool" *facepalm*

Wrong!! Gear ratios have nothing to do with casting distance because the instant you press the thumb bar everything( the gear) is dissengaged. The Gear Ratio is only relevant when cranking. The braking system determines how far you cast

I am willin to put up some money that I could adjust the original reel to cast further or just as far as the new one. I can get a kvd 1.0 ridiculously far about half my spool actully. It also has to do with the rod you're using and line. Good luck throwing something under 1/8oz far with a rod over a med hev.

So its become apparent that gear ratio has nothing to do with casting. Thanks for the echoes. But adjusting the brakes and cast control knob had no affect on the ability to throw lighter tackle. Hence, the reason I said Curado reels were worthless. So I had it backwards when it comes to gear ratios. Lets get a lynch mob together and string me up.

Curados arent worthless, sounds like to me u may have had a bad reel to begin with which happens from time to time. I have fished with every curado that has been manufactured since shimano started making them. The older greenie 200b series is built like a tank and i have the same one i had in high school which was 14 yrs ago. The g series wasnt as well built or refined as the e series which was the series before the g. Hell ive got a buddy i fished with yesterday that couldnt get his left sideplate back on his g6 curado and it was brand new. Moral to the story is dont judge a whole series of reels due to one bad one and for your own sake please understand how a baitcaster works and what different gears do and dont.do to a reel. Do a little research on things before posting.on here as it doesnt bother me but some guys on here love to jump on people with less knowledge than themselves.
