How often do you guys repack them? I lost a outside bearing last Saturday when I was in Emory. It took 8 1/2 hours to finally get it fixed. I don't want to go through that ordeal again.

yrly if you pull a lot of miles, 2 yrs if moderate mileage and 3 yrs max if your ramp is next door. check the rear seals often no matter what the mileage.
always carry a spare set or even 2 whenever you have the boat on back, put them in a good container.

As a friend who grew up farming once told me: "There's only two kids D's of bearings, those that have gone out and those that haven't go e out YET."

No fish is too good for the grease.

What kind of boat do you have? My 97 Nitro came with a grease zerk on the end of the spindle. Very slick setup grease flows through inner bearing than out outer. You simply pull a rubber cover on the end remove some old grease from grease cap and with a grease gun fill till grease comes out. Make sure to leave some room for expansion or the grease will make a mess and seep through the rubber caps.I usually do this at least a couple times during the season. You probably don't have this setup. Make sure bearing aren't too tight this will shorten life too.

It's a 2007 crestliner. Sounds like I have the same set up as yours. I need to pay more attention to it I guess. Had them repacked 2 years ago. I don't fish a lot so I thought I was good. Learned a hard lesson.

I'm guessing you have something going on. If everything was packed right you should have had no problem after 2 years of low usage. Years ago I had a bunch of bearing problems. I was using bearing buddies. Finally after my third problem a guy talked me into getting rid of the bearing buddies and packing them and capping them -- I've never had a problem since. I was probably shooting too much grease in them and ended-up blowing out my seals.

Get them packed well, cap them and use the guidelines from hopalong. Get in the habit of feeling the hubs routinely when you're on the road. If they feel hotter than normal repack them ASAP. They'll usually start running hot a good while before they burn-up completely.

Some good advise guys. THANKS. I can tell everyone to pay more attention to your trailer bearings. It's a night mare for sure when it goes wrong.

Proper lubrication in not the whole story. It's very important to properly torque the spindle nut and check it periodically.

This. I always check hubs even after short distances. If it's warm it needs attention.

if the trailer is a tandem and the brake wheel is warm (not hot), that is fine. Disc brakes will warm it up.

What is everyone's suggestions on oil bath hubs?
- Is changing out the oil and replacing it something that is too difficult to do at home?
- What is the process or steps in doing the job?
- Do you need to change the bearings and seals every 2 years to be on the safe side?
- If you break down on the road and have bearings, seals and races along with grease;
what do you have to do to make the change over on that hub?

Each person you work with holds some promise to your future success.
