Bread dissolves pretty quickly, we always used dog food or dough. It lasts a little longer.

I tried one in August and finally gave up on it.

I tried various baits mentioned in the various forums and different depths. I did not catch a single minnow.

If you are using the long (approx. 2 foot) minnow traps from walmart then dry dog food is great.
If you are using the square home made type minnow trap, then I like Ol' Roy Bark'n Bac'n sold at walmart, it will also draw in crawdads. I use about 3 strips and it last a long time.

Wire the food to the middle of the trap. If it floats to the edges of the screen they have no need to swim in and eat.

Bread is fine. It works well. I have a minnow trap and catch them fine when they are around. It is cold right now so they will be where the water is warmer. You will need to check the water temps and do research where they would be right now and place it there. I do well with a green light in the middle of Lake X and when they are near I drop my trap and let it work or use my long minnow dip net I have.

What I have noticed over the years is finding a place that has minnow traffic (or minnow bottle neck) and current helps. Throw to the bottom with some current and they swim in. I am not sure if they are coming in to eat or what. I use coleman lantern mantles or nylon socks (makes my wife mad or my sister back in the day) with dog food. Just make sure the current is flowing into the hole of the trap. I just throw in the bottom of a drain, ditch or creek come back in a few hours and they are there or not. No creeks windy points, you are looking for a route that minnows travel. and they stay on the bottom. I have one spot off a windy point I found because the bass chase them to the bank there and if I throw a crank bait in and crank it in they jump out of the lake like crazy. If you want to make a "V" diversion with plywood or sticks that helps too. Sometimes you have to leave the trap in there for a while.

This is the trap I have:

Frabill

Now if I need them fast I throw a cast net in the back of coves around brush or stick ups. You catch lots of things and a lot of shad, that is the fun of it.

I watched them swim in the green underwater light I have. But none of them would swim into my minnow trap. frown

I tried different depths for the trap and tried moving it into the shadow just outside the light circle. Nothing worked.

The minnows were there as you could see them swimming when the light came on at night. I would love to hear how somebody managed to attract them to swim into the trap. And yes, it was a cheap Wal-mart trap, not a homemade trap.

Murky water helps. A cast net is a good back up. It's all fun.

Unfortunately I can't throw a cast net. That's why I bought the minnow trap. I used a cast net a few years back but haven't been able to use one for a couple of years now.

But I hope to able to use one again a few months from now. smile
