To all of the RUDE & INCONSIDERATE bank fisherman & bait chuckers @ the Brazos River below PK lake, pay attention! When a flyfisherman is working a section of the river it is common courtesy to give them at least 100ft on either side for room to cast! PLEASE DONT WALK UP AMD WITOUT EVEN SAYING HELLO PLOP DOWN YOUR PILE OF [censored] 20ft FROM ME AND START FISHING! IF I WANTED YOUR COMPANY I WOULD HAVE CALLED AND INVITED YOU TO JOIN ME!!!!!

You should have posted this under the Rude, Inconsiderate and Senseless Forum- a more fitting location. wink

In all seriousness, most conventional tackle users are fine sportsmen and women who know stream etiquette, but if they don't then there's a fine opportunity to nicely explain how things work and how fish move around and so on. Otherwise, we doom them to repeat the same offense over and over again. This is a great discussion for the fly fishing community, especially local clubs. One of the ff club functions is education, and many newcomers to fly fishing or any type of fishing know very little about making room for others, avoiding position a low hole and so on. We should do this and mentor folks along so they become better sportsmen.

Now I step down from my box ...

200 feet of river bank to yourself? I haven't seen very many places where that is possible, but it would be nice.

If you need 100 ft on either side of you then you must be a terrible caster. I have landed fish with people 15 ft on either side of me. I love to fly fish but its a public area and popular waters have lots of fishermen - goes with the territory.

While there are idiots out there (some of which toss flies), I have had good luck with talking to other fisherman about courtesy. Most people are just enjoying the experience of fishing and are open to suggestions.

I am new to fly fishing so I asked a person while out there and he told me as long as my line does not go into the area people are working then all was good. This sounded like pretty good advice for the LMF where we was at. What do y'all think? I do not believe 200' would be possible in a place like that.

Yeah 200' in any kind of popular area is probably more than you will get. It depends on the kind of fishing and the ratio of fisherman to available fishable water. With combat fishing or any time fish are running, like when white bass fishing some of the more popular spots, sometimes people hook into each other and no one gets mad about it. Of course it's pretty hard to fish out or spoil a white bass hole. Anytime you can spoil or haul out the decent fish, it gets dicey. All you have to do is enter a trout stream and you could be screwing up a pool. But nymphing requires less personal space too. Now if I hike 2 miles to a spot I would expect for people to stay at least several hundred yards from each other to fish.

But are we talking about room to flycast or to fish? I've been able to explain the casting to people but not the fishing. I haven't seen many people who want to get a lesson on ethics out on the water. Just become a horribly inaccurate caster all of a sudden, and somehow you magically get some space. wink

I wish I had a shot of one of my trips to the Trinity. There were five of us lined up fishing. I was throwing my 2 weight and catching white bass every two or three minutes. The line of five of us may have been fifty feet long. We had no problems at all. Well, maybe the fact that we were catching a lot of 12 - 13" fish, and too few bigger ones.......... That was the first time my buddy and I met those other three guys, and we've all become regular fishing partners since then. Two of them came down to Rockport and fished with me over Thanksgiving. Where we lined up 20 feet apart on an oyster bar and fished a gut. In heavy wind. With fly rods. With no problems. And we can't wait to do it again.

It's funny; it never occurred to me that our collective gear was a PILE OF [censored]. I guess I'm just not sensitive enough......

I'd love 100' on each side of me! Hell I'm lucky to get 25'. Today there were a few of us nymphing a pool on the Guad, maybe 15' or less from each other and all was well. In fact we all landed at least 1 in that time period. No one knew each other and we all had a communal convo the whole time. Guess it just depends on the people, skill and area.

To keebranch, unpescador, RexW, 5wtflyfisher, Turf Dawg, preast, and jonesy_84:
Any time y'all see me fishing you are more than welcome to set up as close to me as you feel comfortable. Feel free to include your fishing partners and your PILE OF [censored]. If I'm too preoccupied to tell you "howdy" and let you know what I'm catching them on (or not), ask; I'll undoubtedly apologize for my lack of hospitality and welcome you to the spot (actually, I tink I've already invited preast to fish with me on another forum).

To Fly Fishing Fanatic!: PLEASE WAIT FOR MY INVITATION!

most of the fish are in a 100' stretch. u wont get solitude unless u go during the week. just the way it is. consider it a challenge and show them how effective fly fishing can be. that's what I enjoy!!!

most of the time I rope off my 100 yard section of river and place armed guards at each (plus one roving patrol), when they gets shot up they learns my kinda manners real quick.
