But seriously, I like a nice fresh dead Jack. But I'd rather have a fresh anything over a frozen or old jack. 2nd place for me is any kind of ray.

Whole bull whiting... most will say ray or jack, but i've caught more sharks and my biggest sharks on the rod that has a fresh whiting on it, but you will also get more small sharks and bull reds with whiting too.

Whatever is in the surf at the time I try to use. When the sheepshead are in the surf they are one of my favorite baits. Cownose always work better than southern ray for me. I've personally haven't had much luck with jack, but I fish the upper texas coast where jack aren't as plentiful in the surf, so I think that has something to do with it.

Use what is prevalent at the time.

Jack are being caught now around here so that is my first choice, cow nose rays and sting rays are around in abundance, so that is number two.

Fresh and juicy (bloody or whatever) is important. If frozen properly they can be used, but put side to side the fresh will get the runs first, usually.

I've hooked up on fresh mullet, whiting, and croaker when they are in abundance in the surf also.

The best bait is the big red are trout your trying to land actually, thats when I always seem to find them. I've seen people catch them on anything live and bleeding my friends use sardines, and bull croakers when they catch them.

That's true, shark aren't too picky. But the bigger the bait, usually the bigger the shark.
