I recently bought a 09 Nitro Z7 with 150 HP Mercury. The prop that came on it is a Tempest Plus 23 pitch prop. The hole shot seems to be slow, especially with 2 people & a full live well. Is this the right prop for this boat or do I need a different prop, or do I need to look at adjusting the PVS plugs?

Give Steve a call at Steve's Custom Props he can tell you what to do right off the bat with no guesswork. He got me adjusted and running perfect.

Steves the man to talk to about props, but like stated on your other page if the problem wasn't happening before summer it is likely fixed by removing a pvs plug or 2 that is what they are for. That way you can fine tune you holeshot. High temps and summer blended fuel will kill the power your outboard will make, mostly noticed when motor performance is needed most and that is at take off.

Nitro`s have a problem with this to begin with. Live wells 1/2 full and 1/2 full fuel tanks helps. Boats are back end heavy. Put a 24pitch High-Five on a 898 with a 225 Merc and was difference was like night and day. Jumped on plane.

I have all three PVS plugs installed during the winter, and pull two of the plugs during the summer. This makes a tremendous difference in the hole shot for me.

Wasn't there a post similar to this not too long ago and Pender said something about some kind of vents on the Nitros? I tried to find it but no luck...

Transom vents could be the problem. This was the first time I've filled the livewell up and it was FULL! I'll try that and remove a PVS plug and see what happens. Sounds like just a little experimentation.

How is the Holeshot without passengers, full livewells, full gas tank.

I have a Triton TR 186 with a 150 Opti with a 23 Tempest Plus. My holeshot is awesome with only me. With 2 people it slows down but is not terrible. With 2 people, livewells full, and full gas tank, my holeshot is pretty bad.

IMO, though, it is still the right prop as I can still turn 5700 RPMs completely loaded down. You have to choose whether you want it to be fast out of the hole loaded, but watch rpms on top end to not over-rev, or be slower out of the hole with the correct RPMs on the top end.

Set the hook first, ask questions later!!!
