I just wanted to know what y'all think of a surf rod for catfish off the bank. I plan on catching 20 to 50+ lb catfish with it! Let me know what you think and any other tips on going after big cats from shore.(rigs, line, hooks, bait.)

Almost the only way to go I have 2 12ft ugly stick spinning combos and 2 10ft proangler 6500c3 combos plus my arsenal of little rods. My personal advice would be 30lb mono I prefer team catfish tug o war mono. 4-5oz weight depending on the rod. 1-2 ft leader snelled with a 8/0 team catfish double action circle hook. Big shad chunks or cut perch will pretty much catch you all you need

Thanks man I fish 30lb mono too but I can't afford all that team catfish stuff. What cats have you gotten off of shad?

Shad is the slandered for big blues. But carp buff and perch will do to.

I've personally gotten 2 30lb+ blue cats off of shad you can catch channels all day long too and even the occasional flathead. The team catfish 30lb mono is 10 for 400 yards or something like that

10' rod are what most fish with here off the bank. Do 12' too.

Like he said 4-5oz lead is good. But the only thing I would tell you to try is brad not mono if you are using spping rods. Cast a lot better the mono.

This works too I just have always preferred mono over braid

And if you are going to do mono and want cheap go with Offshore Angler tight line from bass pro. Best mono out there IMO. Guy on here got a 75.5 lbs blue with 20lbs tight line. Lake Worth record.

Ya love mono on my baitcast but if all you have ever used on a 10' spinning rod was 30lbs mono you would sh** when you see how much farther you can get with braid! Do the Pepsi challenge! Even 65lbs braid is smaller then 30lbs mono.

Lol gotcha I think the reason I don't like braid is that it doesn't stretch

Mono is cheaper ... That's all I need to make my mind up.. Lol but braid is a lot better. Line capacity is not a problem since I get like 330 yards of 30 lb mono on my reel. I am going out there again so please let me know any other tips you guys have! How do you choose your location to fish? What do you look for? I am fishing with fresh shad if that helps I think that will mostly get me blues... I have been fishing for channel cats since I can remember but I have only caughten one blue and 0 flatheads
