So, why not just bring a roll of the dog poop pickup bags? Drop the load on the ground and pick it up, done. Not sure why you would need this big kit.

I always find a tree log off the beaten path and use it to support me while squatting. Be careful not to have your feet too far back! If you can't find a horizontal low hanging limb and end up having to squat, don't lose your balance!

If you can't get far enough away from the water to dig and dispose of it property, you should bag it up.
On rivers like the devils, you really have no where to dig away from the water without trespassing.
Do some research before you start talking nonsense. I'd bet you don't have an education in either microbiology or ecology.
i don't see any nonsense in what he is talking about. animals #1 and #2 in rivers forever now, why would it make a difference if several people did it? all poo and pee get broken down by bacteria to ammonia, nitrite, nitrate which is then consumed by algae. in streams, aerobic bacteria thrive because of the high concentration of oxygen which helps them break down the poo and pee faster. no i don't suggest anyone take a dump directly on the water, but 20' away from the water and away from camp site is good. i think the trash bag deal is overkill. just a fyi, i have a degree in biology, been keepinf salt and fresh water fish for well over 20 yrs so i do know a little something about this. Might want to go back and reread what I said. If you can get out of the river bed and dig a hole, you're good to go. On some rivers, you can't do this and if that's the case, it's not responsible to [censored] right in the river or on a rock in the river bed. If someone else is enjoying the river down stream, they shouldn't be subject to the #2 you didn't want to dispose of properly, and all of the coliform bacteria now floating in the water. And wild animal poo isn't the same as human poo. All poos are not created equal. Comprende?

Oh my God! This has to be one of funniest TFF posts in a while. Where to start?
First off, great post, Sam. I know you didn't mean to start a fight, but sometime chit happens. As a river yakker I like your idea and will try to incorporate it into my future trips where possible. Given some forethought and planning, carrying out a bag of poop isnt that big of a deal for me. Where I can't use a bag for logistics reasons, I will do what Ive always done, which is to conduct my business well off the river bed. Speaking of that, I like the 6-inch deep hole post, although I forgot who posted it. To whomever it was, thanks for the interesting factoid about fecal decomposition.
Secondly, while all poop may not be created equally, neither are all rivers. Even the most remote rivers here in TX have stretches where you cant or shouldnt defacate due to the close proximity to civilization. But here is the rub: most people who bother to read this forum and post their opinions are probably disposing of their doodoo responsibly. Its the ones we dont hear from that I worry about.
Which brings me to my last point: Ive always felt free to cr@p while on floats, if the need arose, due to my due dilligence in taking care of business while taking care of business. But the explosion of kayak fishing means many more people will be populating the same few rivers, and if you believe as I do that at least ten percent of humanity doesnt give a sh!t about where they leave their sh!it, then we all better tread lightly if you know what I meam. If posts like this one and ideas like Sams helps to raise awareness and build a sense of good river citizenship, then I consider it a good thing.
Now I must go, for I suddenly feel an urge to take a dump

I don't know what's wrong with me but my system shuts down on camping trips. Always been that way. Three days no problem, I can wait. Anyone else like that? Now on the 4th day, watch out, its time to swing by a bus station or some other public place I'll never be seen again.

You must not drink coffee in the AM.

when I was a kid fishing around texas city and mosquito island....we used to start wading really early in the morning, by noon we might be a mile or so off the dike.
if I had to let one rip, I dropped trou and let the good times roll.
wonder how many other boaters or wade fisherman saw a floating log and wondered "wtf is that"?
