Medical Excise Tax on Retail Receipts

The 2.3% Medical Excise Tax that began on January 1st is supposed to be "hidden" from the consumer, but it's been brought to the public's attention by hunting and fishing store Cabela's who have refused to hide it and are showing it as a separate line item tax on their receipts, the email states.

I did some research and found directly from the IRS's website information that PROVES this to be true and an accurate portrayal of something hidden in Obamacare that I was not aware of! Now being skeptical of this I went to the IRS website and found this!





Q1. What is the medical device excise tax? A1. Section 4191 of the Internal Revenue Code imposes an excise tax on the sale of certain medical devices by the manufacturer or importer of the device.





Q2. When does the tax go into effect? A2. The tax applies to sales of taxable medical devices after Dec. 31, 2012.





Q3. How much is the tax? A3. The tax is 2.3 percent of the sale price of the taxable medical device. See Chapter 5 of IRS Publication 510, Excise Taxes, and Notice 2012-77 for additional information on the determination of sale price.

So being more curious I clicked on "Chapter 5

of IRS Publication 510."

And what do I find under "MEDICAL DEVICES" under

"MANUFACTURERS TAXES"?

The following discussion of manufacturers taxes

Electric outboard motors;

Fishing tackle boxes;

Bows, quivers, broadheads, and points;

Arrow shafts;

IRS.gov I think we have definitely been fooled, if we believe that the Affordable Care Act is all about health care. It truly does appear to be nothing more than a bill laden with a whole lot of taxes that we the people have yet to be aware of.

ah, I purchased a Hummingbird fish finder and Hotmaps chip on 04/05/2013 and my receipts don't show that???
I do show general sales tax and use(use ???)
The purchase was for $999.98 so the tax was $82.50. The sales tax rate for me here in Azle is .0825 with nothing showing up as 'medical excise tax' and my tax was indeed only the required $82.50 so, I don't think this story is entirely true...

I think this is a hoax, its been floating around for awhile, and made several appearnaces on this forum.

Yea not sure how true it to be. Received it as an email and thought I would pass it on. It was on the internet so it must be true.....

Maybe it is a marketing ploy as I want to go buy something now just to see if it is on there.

The email/receipt picture did occur, but it was an error on cabelas part, BUT the 2.3% excise tax is 100% legitimate.

It will be paid by the manufacturers and the importers, but I promise you it will be passed on. This is only a small amount of the hidden BS in this bill.

As for the hunting and fishing excise taxes listed out above, they've been there for years. Comes out of every sale I make.

As much as I hate it I knew there was some truth to it....

It is not a "hoax" or internet BS, i have a friend that is high up in the cabela's food chain, it's all legit, but when cabela seperated the "tax" charges and it went public, they actually had a phone call and was informed to stop seperating the "tax" as of right now or they would be penalized for non compliance

Long story short...It's now "forceably" hid from the public and added into the cost of products, but of course passed along to the consumer

The tax is on medical equipment only. Cabela's software was improperly taxing some items in the beginning of the year.

Bought a new rod last week. Only the normal .0825 tax applied. This is lore.

I think it's BS
