I would like to hear that story. I've been catching a bunch of that size stripers at Texoma and thinking about taking my flyrod up with a spinning reel and seeing if it's possible. I just hope they don't break the rod.

Orvis. 25 year warranty... Used it a few times

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

Tfo lifetime no fault warranty grin I would think at least a six wt. you would be fine. On second though let me know when you plan to test this theory ill bring my eight wt and we can see what happens. I caught a 12 on a five wt. behind the dam. And a seven and a half hybrid on my 8'6" 4wt. Trout rod the other day. Don't forget I would be very interested to SEE if this is possible:)

My biggest so far is 14 lbs. A reel with a good drag helps and a rod/line size big enough to cast the fly you use is needed.

Yes, it is lots of fun. Even more fun in rivers.

I catch them all the time. Hybrids too. They are a blast. Clouser minnows and Lefty's Deceivers are two of the most productive flies. Good luck and let us know how you do!

I have not caught a Striper that big yet, but, hopefully will soon. Many Hybrids and tons of Sandies. Also, several LMB over the years. Fly rods are used anywhere a conventional rod is used. I fished for Tarpon in the Florida Keys a few times(never hooked one) but casted to very large 70 lb+ fish. We used 10-12 wt rods. I know many who fish very large salmon and Steelhead with fly rods. For the lakes here in N. TX, rods I use are 6wt - 8wt. Lines are either full sink with a shooting head, sink tip or floating and leaders 4-7 ft length.
A good friend of mine guides for Stripers on fly rods at Texoma- Steve Hollensed. Happy to hook you up with him.
I suppose you could use a spinning reel on a fly rod. The fly rod is actually designed to cast fly line and pull a weightless fly, while a conventional rod (spinning rod) is designed to launch a weighted lure and pull line behind.
I am happy to help you with your fly casting anytime.

I'll probably try this next week. I'm retired and the striper bite at dusk has been might mean. It is mixed in with a bunch of smallmouth and largemouth on the points but they will be fun on my little flyrod too. They might break off but I might get them in too.

I have a cheap flyrod my wife bought me in a travel kit by Daiwa. It will be a blast to see how much it bends once that River pig hits. That first run those stripers make always scares me, as I think they will never stop pulling out line.

It will never get better. I still do both, but its sad to watch.

Right now I have a light spinning real with 8 lb test line I was using in march for sand bass that I'll try first. I'll just tie on a big white mepps spinner and see if I can get one on that. I'm not sure I could get one right now on a streamer, as they come up on the points at dusk. Need something that creates vibration or rattles.

Yep on the Clouser.

I've never caught anything over 20" but even 18" is a blast.
